There is not a talking version of this available.

Re: I'm Back, revisited

FreeStyle won't work with Accu-Check as it's a different system. The

principle is the same, you prick your finger or your forearm but the

pinprick doesn't have to go as deep as with the Accu-Check since the system

only requires a very very small amount of blood which absorbs into the side

of the test strip. I have been using this now for a couple of weeks and have

not developed any purple marks from the pinpricking. In fact, I use a lot

less pressure than with the Accu-Chek, I set mine to 2 instead of the usual

3, and it works fine without too much blood coming out of my finger. You

don't want a big amount coming out, that would saturate the test strip too

much. I got used to it pretty quickly, too. The big caveat is that I don't

know how a totally blind person can use the machine, and I don't know if

there's a talking version of FreeStyle. Mine's got big numbers on it which

helps me. As for taking the sample, you could do that without sight with a

little orientation but you really have to know where that little tiny blood

sample is and you have to get the test strip right up to it so the blood

touches either side, not the middle. It might be tricky but it could

probably be done with the right training. Hope this helps.

Hey! Punctures aren't bad with the Accu-Chek and insulin injections aren't

that bad, either. I think it's counterproductive to use glucose measurement

devices or the possibility of insulin injections as a threat! That way lies

noncompliance.

When it pays, i.e., never.

I almost prefer that it sting a bit. that way, I know I'll get some blood.

But I don't think it hurts much.

Jen,

Good to have you back.

Curious to know how the job hunting is going.

Best wishes,

Cheryl.

Hi Cheryl,

I'm actually not job hunting anymore. *smile* I graduated with my BA this

past October, and to my surprise got accepted into the teacher education

program which I applied to. This really caught me off-guard because I'd

heard that most people have to apply more than once before they're accepted,

so I was ready to take a semester or two off to work and then reapply

(especially since my acceptance was delayed by about two months because they

had more applicants than spots available) ... but things change quickly! I'm

now into the second week of the program and it's very intense, classes and

practicums every day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. plus an hour or more of

travel time each way for me, plus homework, but I am loving it and am so

excited about getting into an actual elementary school classroom in a few

weeks!

I hope you and your family are doing well and are having an enjoyable start

to the new year!

Dear Bill,

Yes, your answer helped. Thanks for taking time to explain it so thoroughly.

I'll wait until the free style learns to talk, but meanwhile, I'm glad to know

their are other, more comfortable, alternatives available.

Lissi

Dear Jen,

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! What fantastic news! I'm absolutely thrilled for you!

This is going to be a huge year for you. How long is the programme?

My family and I are all doing well. has recently changed his

insulin regime so that he is now taking novo rapid with meals and protafane

at 9:30 PM. This change has had a positive effect on his hba1c, but there

is still a lot of room for improvement. He and our daughter are currently

attending a youth camp so my husband and I have had a lovely peaceful couple

of days.

I hope you remain as excited about your studies as you obviously are now,

All the very best,

Cheryl.
