Hi there,

I found this group about a month ago, and I've been lurking since. Reading

everyone's experiences and feedback to eachother to be helpful already. I

thought I'd

come out and say Hi!

My name is . I'm 34, have 2 young beautiful children and a long

history of

disordered eating. When I was 1 yo, my Ped told my mom I was too thin. He told

her to

feed me whole milk and lots of fat. She did and I gained weight. My mom

had/has her

own weight issues and decided I was too heavy at 2 yo, and I went on my first of

dozens of

diets. Anyway, I won't get into the complexity of my history now, but I will

overview

my experience with IE.

About 12 years ago my therapist gave me a Geneen Roth book. I knew she was onto

something. It clicked and opened my eyes to the possibility of letting go of

dieting and

using food to deal with my emotions. I now believe I was not ready to let go of

that

defense mechanism without replacing it with something as effective. I was still

actively

using emotional eating to cope with some hard issues. In short-more therapy

needed :)

For the next decade, I danced back and forth between eating whatever/whenever I

wanted

(but without any awareness of eating when hungry/stopping when full)

and extreme dieting and exercise. About a year ago, I came across another group

about

healing from emotional eating, and I knew it was time. So, for the last 9-10

months, I've

embraced IE, although I didn't call it IE until 1 month ago.

I. Will. Never. Diet. Again.

I've been healing my relationship with myself. Learning that I am not bad, and

I do not

deserve to be held hostage by food and my negative body/self image. I'm trying

to allow

myself the space and time it needs to recover from years of torture. I believe

my body will

release any weight it doesn't need when it's ready, but what's most important is

the whole

me.

I joined this group to chat with like-minded folks and receive some additional

support.

So, nice to meet you all :)

Hi and welcome! You are in the right place, lots of support

here!

I was shocked to read your story about your mom putting you on a diet at

such a young age. I am so sorry about that and what you have endured.

Please let us know what you need, how we can help and post as much as you

want, this group has tons of knowledge and empathy and support to spare!

I bet your children are intuitive eaters, considering you know what not

to do! I know lots of moms that are raising their children completely

different from how they were raised because they see what those messages

and rules do at such a young age.

Congratulations on your declaration of never dieting again! I love to

hear that.

Thanks!

Gillian
