Guest guest
Thanks for getting back to me on that. Now I am more interested I'll look at my market first - they have all sorts of 'bulk' items to buy in whatever amount one wishes to. Nice to not have to buy a 5# sack for a test > > Not at all sticky. It cooks up more like whole grain stuff you were talking about. Now that I wait until I'm hungry, > what I want becomes clear. 99% of the time, it's healthy and I eat it > the way I want it. Yay for you! It feels so good when we're able to eat in response to real hunger, so much more satisfying. And yes, the more healthful foods taste better then too - they don't feel like hard work or stuff you " have " to have, you actually enjoy them because they feel kind of fresh and alive and really meet that hunger. I hope to get to that point with every meal ... one day ... :-) s

I can even actually focus and get my act together enough in the mornings to cook breakfast if that's the reward (I am SO not a morning person). And it's satisfying and lasts me for hours - no need for morning nibbles. (Does that help assuage that dastardly little calorie counter in your head? ) s
Guest guest
Well Ivy, I did find some steel cut oats - right in the 'bulk' bins at my store! I bought about a couple of cups worth and just got thru trying them out. I cooked them like I did the cracked wheat I usually make and the resulting porridge was almost like my wheat one. I ate it the same too. THANK YOU for the input as now I have an alternative to enjoy too. One thing I will do different next time is to use less water. I use 1 cup water to 1/3 cup cracked wheat so did the same with the oats. It was too much and I needed to cook it longer to get most of the water 'out' as it was starting to look like it would be 'slick' tasting too. Worked out OK, but a bit drier would help make it less 'mushy' from extra cooking. Now I will play with flavors and adding other things - dried cranberries instead of raisins, sliced almonds instead of walnuts, a tiny pinch of cinnamon? Its it fun to PLAY with one's food?!? LOL!!! > > Not at all sticky. It cooks up more like whole grain stuff you were talking about.
