I just discovered this week the difference between eating stuff (fruit, porridge, etc) with real sugar on it, as opposed to the various artificial sweeteners I have been using for ages. I thought I didn't mind the taste of the sweeeteners and that they didn't affect my enjoyment of what I was eating - but OH MY GOD the difference once I tried them again with a bit of real sugar! Cheers S PS - I loathe skim milk too. Gimme da reeeeeal stuff! Ice cold! <yum>
Guest guest
Sigi, Oh my God! When I started IE, I put a touch of pure maple syrup in my oatmeal. It was fan-FREAKING-tastic! You know what I've discovered, too? Now that I wait until I'm hungry, what I want becomes clear. 99% of the time, it's healthy and I eat it the way I want it. I realized that now, I don't snack anymore. Check this out, I can actually stop at 2 cookies. Why? I'm eating what I want already so there's no longing. Plus, if I want some later I can have 'em. > > > Too true. Guest guest
Honey Poppyseed salad dressing? That sounds delicious! I used to eat a poppyseed dressing that was great, but they stopped making it! What's the name of it (brand)? Where do you get it? Thanks! Zuzel > > > > Fat free dressing...ugh!! Guest guest
I can understand how you feel about skim milk. I used to see my mother drink it and think - yuck! But when I was a teenager I spent a couple of weeks visiting my uncle's dairy. We drank WHOLE unprocessed milk and it was like drinking liquid cream. I put on over 5# during my visit and I started drinking low-fat (2%) then. I later switched to 1% and a few years ago dropped to the non-fat level. I know its not most people's preference, but now I can't hardly drink 2% (which is least one can find in restaurants). I'm also not a big water drinker so in a way milk became one of my major fluid intakes so I guess its better that I don't prefer whole milk! > > Skim milk is one of those things that > I've tried and tried to enjoy because > it's supposed to be " good " for me, > but I just hate it. Everyone says > you get used to it over time, but is > bad food something I WANT to " get used > to!? " I'll stick with my 2%, thanks. That cracks me up about the teenage boy. My son is only 7 - so I " ve a ways to go. Good thing cuz I really depend on the leftovers for my husband's lunch as well as my own. Guest guest
Horrid is right. And they aren't the least bit healthy even though they try to tell us they are. What a waste. We swtiched to whole milk a few years ago when we found out how much more available the nutrients are in whole milk - and how heatlthy the fat in it actually is. We often get it straight from the farm. I thought it would be difficult to go from skimmed to whole, but that was a switch that was very easy to take LOL. I miss the milk I used to get - it was all pale golden with a thick layer of cream on top that we could leave - or take a bit off to pour over fruit and desserts. > > Skim milk is one of those things that > I've tried and tried to enjoy because > it's supposed to be " good " for me, > but I just hate it. Guest guest
Hi Sigi, Sheet cake is just regular cake made in a shallow pan (like a deep cookie sheet) so that there is greater surface area upon which to decorate as well as easier to slice into many small pieces. Its a popular option over a layer cake for celebrations and usually only made at bakeries which have the larger ovens to put the larger pans into. My guess about why it doesn't taste as good as 'regular' cake is due to the bakeries using more flour and sugar and less eggs and flavoring than one would when home baking a cake. I don't like these either due to it mainly being an over sweet with no taste type of thing. But then I am a home baker so can satisfy my tastes myself Cheers and greetings to OZ! ehugs, Katcha > > > > I question it all the time. Guest guest
Hmm Iv. I " ve never tried it with cream? I make it in water but I've always wanted to try cooking it in milk or almond milk--but I can't quite shake the old calorie counter in my head.... > > ---> > > Oh, me too! Guest guest
Zuzel, The brand name is Bonnie's Gourmet (distributed from Rochester NY) but I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is no longer available because I bought it at a grocery clearance store. The ingredients are - Vinegar, Mustard flour, Honey, Salt, Modified Food Starch, Spices (has to be poopyseeds), Natural flavor, Xanthan Gum, -1% Sodium Benzoate & Potassium Sorbate. I think if you just played around with the main ingredients of Vinegar, dry mustard, honey and poppyseeds, you could get pretty close to what you want and not have any preservatives either ;-) Thickening with some cornstarch could work, but you would have to heat the mixture to achieve that??? Have fun & hope you find that taste! - Katcha > > Honey Poppyseed salad dressing? That sounds delicious! Guest guest
Amen, sister lol! May I add Brussels sprouts to that list? > > I had a friend scoff at me when I said I won't eat something I don't like just because it's good for me. Most healthy foods I like, so I refuse to eat something I don't like, whether it's healthy or not. I don't think not eating beets and sweet potatoes is going to kill me. And now that I'm no longer dieting, I am relieved to never again have to buy fat free salad dressing, cottage cheese, or egg beaters. > > > __________________________________________________ >

Guest guest
I so totally agree! I swear that all these 'bakeries' do is whip up flour and sugar into forms! Flavor and substance PLEASE?!? Of course my answer is baking these myself :) > > Those [sheet cakes] are ghastly. I didn't even like those in my dieting days. Especially the yucky fluff they call 'frosting'. I'm not sure what it is, but that is soo not frosting.

Guest guest
One thing that shuts up my calorie counter - when I have oatmeal for breakfast , my 'usual' is steel cut oats (cooked in water, cuz that seems to work best for cooking them - but I really like the texture of steel cut) Then I add a blob of butter (good CLAs!), cream, and maple syrup - oh, and a glass of whole milk I " m happy cuz it tastes wonderful, is packed with nutrients and healthy fat, and starts my day off right (and when it starts right, it continues right) and the little calorie counter in my head is happy, cuz it realises it's only about 3-400 calories, which is a good range for breakfast So, it retreats to a corner and sits quietly humming to itself... > > > > ---> > > > > Oh, me too!
