In Europe they eat lunch meat and cheese for breakfast........

A more sustaining, protein filled breakfast really does make more

sense. I think Americans eat cereal because its #1 FAST and #2 a left

over from when they were kids and that's what they wanted. Plus with

'mom' working, having the time to make something (eggs, pancakes etc.)

just wasn't in the cards.

We have stayed with friends in Munich several times and know what a

German breakfast is :)

amounts that I do it that get to me! I've noticed for the past 1+

weeks I've been listening to my body in regards to food, I'm having

much more energy and I think clearer, too! My biggest thing that I

can't believe right now is that I am actually pushing my plate away

when food begins tasting like cardboard (I guess, that's my cue that I

had enough!). I love it!!!

It really depends on the country. Yes in Germany, and some Brits,

too, would traditionally have lots of meat in the morning (but this

seems to be changing with the younger generation). But many countries

tend to eat pastries for breakfast (Spain, France, Italy).

I used to live in France, and I always joked that the national

breakfast was coffee and a cigarette. ;)

I know Indians will eat more " normal food " for breakfast also. I had

made a casserole for some friends after the husband had been in the

hospital and they told me it was so much food that they had enough

left over for breakfast! My American stomach got kind of queasy

thinking about that. It's funny how our bodies are conditioned by how

we grew up.

Continuing on with the 'different' breakfast theme, I remember

stopping over at a Japanese American girlfriend's house on my way to

the bus stop to go to school. A typical breakfast for them would be

things like left over rice with an egg cracked over that and hot tea

poured over the top (lightly cooking the egg?!?). And talk about a

queasy stomach - the mother of my friend loved mackeral at that time

of day too! It was a real eye opener to how others had different

'tastes' from myself and home experiences.

Speaking of normal food for breakfast - I don't mind it at all! Check this out! On the way back home from Alabama, we stopped outside of Ft. , KY. The lady at the hotel told us to go to this placae called Charlies, a steakhouse that had been there for over 50 years and people would stand in line for a long time to be seated. It was 4th July weekend, so most military families were traveling, and we got seated right away. I ordered a nice primerib steak, some salad and fries. It was really good, but extremely filling (we've been told that they used to have their own cows - they had to, judging by the size of that steak). Anyway, I walked out with half a steak in a to-go box. The next morning, we did our continental breakfast, and here I was with my heated up Charlie's steak a bagel and some OJ, whereas everybody else had cereal and

stuff.... Oh it was great! We didn't really need to stop for lunch until 2ish or so that afternoon. Just thought you'd get a kick out of that! Nickie

Wow, those are some truly unusual breakfast choices. But if it tastes good...who cares. It's just strange how people from other countries and/or cultures can have such unusual tastes (they may say the same about us...lol) Nickie

I had a chance to go to Thailand to teach a few years ago and the hotel I stayed at provided breakfast every day. It was so funny, they would put out fried rice, stewed meats or fish, soups and tons of spices and for the "western" guests, they would put out boxes of frosted flakes! I enjoyed their traditional food much more and the one time they served a "hot" western breakfast it was a slice of cold ham over a sliced egg product (it looked like a fried egg, but it came in a can and they sliced it like bread - quite unique). It was fun to remember that, thanks for starting the topic! CW

Germans also eat bread rolls with jam for breakfast. Some kids like

cereal but traditionally it's bread and/or breadrolls.

Eggs and the like was usually for Sunday breakfasts. Sometimes we ate

cake from Saturday afternoon for Sunday breakfast. Our family never ate

meat and cheese for breakfast during weekdays.

However, things are changeing over here.

When I stay with friends breakfast is usually different from what is

" normal " for the family. Why? Because we love to serve good and lots of

foods for our friends, lol.

One could always be tempted to say: " Yes, that's going to be a nice meal

- when do the other five people arrive? "

styxia, I swear you must know our friend ! She isn't happy unless

we would eat enough for at least 3 people. After a week of her 3 BIG

meals a day we were beginning to wonder if her real motive was to see

if she could get us to EXPLODE! (kidding of course :)

Cheers, Katcha
