Accountability " I am accountable to you, you are accountable to me and we all are accountable to all and then only we can Stop AIDS " . Rural Gujarat and World AIDS Day Programme 2006 Gujarat AIDS Awareness and Prevention Unit (GAP) is working in 20 villages of Sabarkantha District for last 4 years. The theme of GAP's intervention programme is Strengthening the local governance and mitigate the spread of HIV/AIDS. World AIDS Day campaign highlighted the accountability of the project work and presented the summary of work done in these villages to its beneficiaries. During the project period GAP reached to 10,000 men and 850 women of 15 -45 years age group. In each village peers have been trained and the total number of trained persons in is 622 in 20 villages. In an average there is one trained person in each village behind 70 villagers who is able to disseminate information on HIV/AIDS. Altogether 93 positive people have been contacted who availed the emotional and social support from GAP. GAP also guided them to avail the ART from civil hospital, Ahmedabad. Enable environment has been achieved in each village to promote free distribution of condom manned by trained peer educators. The condom pick up remained high indicting the risk perception and sexual behavioural change. GAP presented this work report in each village highlighting the value of accountability towards the beneficiaries and explained the significance of World AIDS Day Programme. 20 meetings were attended by 2000 participants including panchayet members, opinon leaders, school teachers, doctors, anganwadi workers, trained village workers and beneficiaries in general.
