Guest guest
This is a small, very short term study, and I found this bit of the report a bit confusing - perhaps I didn’t fully understand it: <snip> At 6 months the negative biopsy rate was 66.1%. There was no biochemical evidence of disease in 71.9% overall. <snip> If the negative biopsy rate was 66.1% at six months, does that mean that the positive biopsy rate was 33.9% and that one third of the men treated were still found to have cancer cells in their prostates six months after treatment? But if this is the case then why was there no biochemical evidence of disease in 28.1% of cases? Did the ‘missing’ 5.8% of the men have cancer cells that failed to generate enough PSA to meet the criteria for biochemical failure? And this is regarded as a favourable outcome? What would an unfavourable outcome be? All the best Terry Herbert I have no medical qualifications but I was diagnosed in ‘96: and have learned a bit since then. Data from the literature show promising early oncological outcomes and a favorable side effect profile. This study is a preliminary report of the Italian experience (Perugia and Turin) of patients treated with the Sonablate*500 high intensity focused ultrasound device.
