Have to add my 2 cents here. This is what I have found with my

research and use of licorice:

Licorice extract inhibits 11-beta-hydroxysteriod dehydrogenase

(11-BHOD) in the kidneys. 11-BHOD is the enzyme that inactivates

cortisol. People with adrenal insufficiency do not retain enough

sodium and have an excess of potassium. The ration between our body's

sodium and potassium is like a see saw. If one goes up, the other is

down. Blocking 11-BHOD in the kidneys allows cortisol access to the

mineralocorticoid receptors triggering an increeased retention of

sodium and lowering of potassium. This action brings a person into

sodium/potassium balance.

Hence it extending the life of hydrocortisone. You should not take it

if you have high blood pressure and it may help with the

mineralocorticoid activity that Florinef helps.

I take Florinef, hydrocortisone and licorice root powder.

Hope that adds to the discussion,

P.S. The increased sodium causes the body to conserve water, which

quickly increases your overall blood volume. Increased blood volume

indirectly increases blood pressure by increasing the efficency of the

heart. So...I have had much fewer heart palpitations and don't have

to run to the bathroom every 10 minutes. I still run to it about

every 30 or so now. (rolling eyes)
