Guest guest
Estogen could very well have contributed to your thyroid problems. In Werner and Ingbar's " The Thyroid " it says that estrogen increases the auto-immune disorders of the thyroid. It has to do with it's effect on the immune system. It tends to inhibit the body's mechanisms for turning off immune attacks on itself. Estrogen also causes more thyroid hormone to be bound in the blood to protein carriers, making it less available to tissues. It also has detrimental effects on the brain and thryoid itself, which can slow thyroid function. Natural progesterone may be very helpful. You can purchase natural progesterone in many health food stores as a cream. One product, Progest E, is very good. Natural progesterone (which matches human progesterone) increases thryoid function in tissues and increases output of the thyroid. Synthetic progestins commonly found in HRT and birth control pills are disruptive to progeterone production and function and ultimately estrogenic according to Dr. Ray Peat. The main trouble with the progesterone pills is that about 80% of it is destroyed by digestive juices and it is not good for the liver, which gets a lot of it and it's break down products because of it's proximity to the digestive tract. Synthetic progesterones are particularly bad for the liver because they are substances not known in nature. The liver must then try to remove all these byproducts of hormones. Creams are better because you use much smaller amounts and it doesn't cause the liver to get so much. Progesterone can also improve blood sugar control. Progesterone is lost in hypothyroidism. Changes in the brain by hypothryoidism cause less production. Also, in hypothyroidism, the body produces too much estrogen as a response to the damage that is occuring from a slowed metabolic rate. Progesterone is also used up to convert to Cortisol, which becomes low in hypothryoidism. So, it sure won't hurt you, and it might help. No studies to date have found any dangers from physiologic doses of natural human progesterone. It has been studied since the 1920s. My experience with it in the past was that it did improve my thyroid function and I lost about 5 lbs on it at one time in my subclinical phase. It helped my sleep a lot, also. Eventually, my hypothryoidism got too bad for progesterone to help. I don't think that a person should stay on it long term. But, it can ease the way sometimes. One study done with it found that it lowered hot flashes in 80% of the participants. Tish

Guest guest
Welcome, Jill... Can you get copies of the labs they've already run? We'd need the lab ranges too.... Hearing the term 'subclinical' leads my mind to the scenario that the doc only checked TSH and that it was at the high end of the range and he doesnt' want to deal with it.... I'd like to see if he's run the thyroid hormone tests and what those values are. TSH is the Thyroid Stimulating hormone. It's sent out by the pituitary gland to signal the thyroid to reduce or increase hormone. As a test on it's own, it's not worth squat and worth even less once you are on meds. I'd also like to see if he checked for thyroid antibodies. If that is the case... well, treatment is a bit different and you have to be more aware of your symptoms. They better handle you get on this AND the sooner.. the less damage to your body. Trust me, one that was undermedicated for over a decade and then couldn't' get meds. The body will keep on going for a LONG time.. but the damage builds and many of us are still waiting to see what we are able to get back and what will end up being permanent damage. We set this group up to help others to understand, and as a source of information so that they don't end up going through what so VERY many of the rest of us did. Lack of proper testing, medication and understanding. It does get confusing at times. But hang in there. Ask questions to clear up any confusion.. that's how we learn, by asking questions. And for everyone. Sharing your experiences and symptoms, experiments and solutions with the rest of us helps us all. With the way that this thyroid stuff affects us all so differently it's great to hear what is working for others, in case it might work for us too..... Guest guest
Hi Jill! Once your thyroid is up and running, it may produce enough progesterone. If you have estrogen dominance, then you may need some help and there are many options. Some do not want the progesterone going through their whole systems (pill) and many use herbal solutions (they say progesterone with the USP after it) or progesterone suppositories to get it only where you need it. I have been dealing with low progesterone that has lead me back to pursuing the thyroid and I am getting closer to getting help. Good luck! Guest guest
I am new to this group. I just finished reading Intuitive Eating and am looking for a good support group to help me through this process. I actually read a portion of the book a few years ago. Unfortunately I didn't read the whole thing, and therefore didn't get into many of the principles and instead just started eating uncontrolably. I didn't take the important step of listening to my body and giving it what it needed. I ended up gaining 10 pounds and went back to the WW cycle. My problem with diets is that I'm just so sick of it all. I can no longer follow any kind of plan for more than a day anymore. I feel so resentful and stressed out with all the rules and measuring. Eating turns into such an ordeal it's actually easier to simply not eat at all, thus the weight loss. Certainly not a healthy way to loose is it? But then eventually I get overly hungry and the eating begins again. Mix in a business trip, either my husband or my own, doesn't matter because regardless I'm lonely and bored and I end up consuming a pound of french fries and a bottle of wine in an entire evening. Oh what to do.... So my big challenges on this journey are to learn to listen to my body and give it what it really wants, work on the fullness factor and start dealing with my emotional hunger. Based on some of your posts I've been reading, sounds like I'll have some friends to depend on here. Many thanks!

It's gotten harder and harder and harder over the years to follow the rules of a diet. I can remember being really " strong-willed " and " committed " and all - today I can't imagine how I did it. I wouldn't be able to be " on a plan " for one day. I hate it so much. I really wonder how I did follow all the restrictions some years ago. It feels like I got drained over the years. Regards s.
