Guest guest
Hi everyone, I am new here and I thought I would drop a little note to tell u who I am. I am a mom of 2 sons, 32 yrs old. I was just diagnosed with a very vauge condition... Inflamitory arthritic disease, and as everyone knows that covers, RA , Lupus, and a plethera of other conditions. I started on prednisone, and god was I happy, then after 2 weeks they took me off, and put me on an antimalaria med, (come to find out it was a sulfa) so when my throat closed off and I couldnt breath, they took me off of that one...(go figure). Then they wanted me to try the name brand of it........... (thinking I was allergic to a generic componet of it) and my general dr said NO! So after 2 weeks of wishing I could jump out in front of a bus (or hell, jump at all) I went and saw my general dr today and he put me back on Prednisone, so hopefully here in 24hrs (ish) I will be able to do something besides lay in bed. This condition came on like a tornado... I went to bed fine one day and the next morning I couldnt walk..... Did anyone elses start like that?? I have found myself to be popping wayyyyyyyyy too many pain meds as of late, between the Lortab & Darvocet and Norco.... If Im not carefull I am going go to sleep and not get up.! They have to do something to get this in check!!! Well thats my story... wish it wasnt... Its sunny and cold here in SE Illinois...so I am going to take a nap... Thanks all for having me, Hope to meet some of you soon. Kerry
Guest guest
Hi Kerry, welcome and hello. I hope the pred kicks in and you start feeling better soon. I have RA. It came on in 1998 but then simmered for years and I wasn't diagnosed until Dec of last year. The first year of diagnosis and treatment can be confusing and overwhelming. I hope you find a medicine you like soon. Where in SE Illinois do you live? We used to live in Normal and we're thinking of returning to Champaign. Guest guest
Hi Kerry. Sorry to hear that you are struggling right now. I don't have near as much experience as the majority of people in this support group but I wanted to welcome you. You will find a lot of comfort and many ideas from the folks here. I too have been diagnosed with inflamatory arthritis with nothing more definite yet. I go back to my rheumy this friday for more test results so hopefully I'll know more then. Where are you in SE Illinois? I am close to Carbondale. [ ] Hi all... Hi everyone, I am new here and I thought I would drop a little note to tell u who I am. I am a mom of 2 sons, 32 yrs old. Guest guest
Kerry, Prednisone seems like a miracle drug at first. I have Polymyalgia Rheumatica, and yes, it came on all of a sudden. I slept on an airplane, and had a stiff neck when I got off. Within a few days, I could hardly move, I was so stiff and hurt so much. Prednisone made it all go away, but my doctor cut the amount back almost immediately and put me on a combination of prednisdone and methotrexate. Every time I would start feeling a little better, he'd make me cut back on the prednisone again.I was really disappointed, but now I understand why. 3 years later, I've managed to wean myself down to 2 mgs a day, but I have steroid diabetes and osteoporosis as a result of the prednisone use. The only way I got below 5 mgs a day of prednisone was to start Humira. I had hoped to be off the prednisone completely by now, but had a couple of bouts with illness this winter and had to go off the Humira. I've managed not to increase the prednisone, but it's been tough. Lots of vicodin. Some people seem to have no problems with prednisone, but you do need to be monitored while you take it. Do you see a rheumatologist? You should talk over the various options, good luck to you. It must be hard to feel so awful and have children to look after! At least mine are grown, and I can always go home when the grandkids get to be too much for me. Guest guest
Yes I have a rheumatologist, and I called him first this morning b4 calling the general Dr, but he was too busy , it took them a while to call back,by that time I had already seen my general doc. When they called they told me that they are just going to have me run another dose of Prednisone too. I don't want to stay on it forever, I have read the nasties about it, and I watched my grandmother deteriorate because of it... But they have to figure out something I am not allergic to. I am on 20mg pred for 7 days and then 10 mg for 3 weeks. I guess we just have to go from there... Thanks for writing.. Its nice to know im not the only one like this..... Guest guest
Hi Kerry, Sorry to hear you've not too good. I have inflammatory arthritis as well, so I suspect have many others in the group. Did you know there are over 200 different kinds of arthritis, and as my specialist said they can't name them all. I think inflammatory arthritis does cover a wide area, but I'm always linked in with the RA kind not OA as this is a different kind. Inflammatory seems to travel around the body and you don't know where its going to strike next. Mine came on slowly though. My sister has had another type which I really can';t think of the name which came on suddenly. I hope you and your docs find some medication which suits. Don't be afraid to voice your opinion after all its your body! Speak again soon. Sue (UK) [ ] Hi all... Hi everyone, I am new here and I thought I would drop a little note to tell u who I am. Guest guest
Hello Kerry, and welcome, sorry you are here with us. It may take some time for the drs. to find the mix of meds (never call them drugs, LOL) for you. I think I speak for MOST of us, we love the help that we get from Prednisone, but get off it as quickly as possible because it can rot your bones. Also, long term use affects the kidneys. NEVER, and I mean NEVER go off Prednisone after long term use without your drs knowledge. The warnings on the script say that, but don't say " why " . It's because going off Pred too quickly can damage the kidney, your body has to adjust back to where the kidney functions on it's own since pred takes over some of the work of the adrenal gland. That's about the best that I can explain it, someone else on here could do it much better. Also, take calcium ! Was the 'malaria " drug Plaquenil? Too bad if it was, that's helped a lot of us, as has methotrexate. You will see that referred to as MTX on here. You do need to get something that will help you, at your age, you want to slow down joint deterioration as quickly as possible. You may even need to stay on low dose Pred for a long time, I've been on/off of it for many years. There is a wealth of knowledge among our members, experience being the best teacher. Good luck Patsy El Mirage, AZ DX 2005 Stage 1 PBC AIH/SLE/RA/COPD Just a woman of letters....
Guest guest
Yes it was Plaquenil. Unfortunately I am allergic to Sulfa drugs This morning I am not feeling too bad. Fingers have a mind of their own tho... I have had to sit here and hit the backspace button a billion times..LOL The prednisone has kicked in so hopefully I can get off my big butt and get something done... I tend to have an all or nothing personality when it comes to cleaning , ect. Finding the line where I should stop isnt something I have mastered yet, since this illness.... Talk to you all soon Kerry -- [ ] Re: Hi all... 8 out of 10 voices in my head say, " Dont shoot! "

Guest guest
Hi Jen, Try to pace yourself with FM, it is quite different from arthritis, try not to do too much on good days as the after effect can last several days. Try to get some Hydrotherapy, I have found this good. I have had FM for 12 years now, and founded our local group. If you need any more info on FM please contact me and the same goes for anyone else with FM. Try to keep positive. Sue [ ] Re: Hi all... > > > I am new.
