OK I have decided it is time for me to get more serious about getting in

better shape. Those of you that have used both, which would you prefer

that is EASY on the lower back.. a non-motorized treadmill or an

exercise bike?

I am leaning towards the treadmill just because of the gal's position on

the bike. It looks liek a painful back position.

I always preferred the treadmill to the bike. The bikes always hurt

my bum no matter which kind of seat they had. Back in the day, I

also found that you could add arm circle or other actions to make a

more difficult work out on the treadmill; but off course now we want

easier.

I have a power treadmill (that I haven't been on in a few months,

but will definitely get back to) but I have been on a friend's non-

motorized before and it seemed pretty good to me.

Just my 2 cents.

Val,

We had an exercise bike and a treadmill...got rid of the treadmill as we can

walk outside, and prefer to, most of the year. Walking really keeps us regular

if you get my drift.

But we loved the bike as we can read while working out on that. However it

started hurting our backs so we switched to a recumbent. Let me tell you,

that's great for the back AND you get a good workout too! It's now my favorite

method of aerobic exercise. Second is the rowing machine at the gym. I could

just row all day!

I think that depends on what bothers your back. For me, the bike would be

better, because standing and walking bothers my lower back, but sitting

slouched feels better (hence my horrid posture, which doesn't help matters

when you are only 5 feet tall on a good day anyway).

But I think for those of us with hypo and AI, that you should start out with

more gentle exercise, like yoga. I'm going to start, I raelly am, I swear

it. Have the video, just need to get up and go put it in the VCR.....

You have helped me so much that I am going to give you my thoughts on

your questions. Honestly, from someone who has been exercising for 3

years now, your choices are not the best. Just my humble opinion. I

think they are cheap and you will not be happy with them therefore you

will stop using them. I have had two back surgeries so I know about

back problems. The treadmill that is not motorized will put a lot of

strain on your back. I agree with you on the bike and the position of

her back. If you are going to spend money on some equipment, spend

enough that you get something of quality that won't hurt you and that

will hold up. You will continue to use it if you buy something of

quality.

I went to Sears and checked out their stuff. They have great items

and they will set up a payment play for you. Don't buy the

inexpensive stuff, you will not be happy and you won't use it.

One other thing...I bought a basic Pilates DVD when I first started to

exercise. I did it in front of my own TV. It was hard but it really

worked wonders and it worked fast. It built muscles fast and I would

tell the difference right away, plus I was sore as hell so I knew it

was working. I then bought a basic weight training DVD, some 2 pound

and 3 pound hand weights and started that routine. I lost 65 pounds

that year and have kept it off by doing Pilates (remember I have had 2

back surgeries) and using my treadmill.

Oh...I am in stage 7 adrenal fatigue so I take it slow and easy but I

get her done. Staying strong is very important. It will help your

blood sugar, blood pressure, your immune system, etc, etc, etc.

Somedays I get really depressed because I am too tired to exercise.

It has helped me so much that even though I don't want to do it some

days, I do it and feel better.

Hope that helps,

a in Snowy North Idaho

Well there is no room in my budget for more thn $100 to spend on

equipemnt that I am unsure I even CAN use. Even if it was the greatest

thing on earth I couldn't afford more than that and i have accouts with

Fingerhut and Sears will NOT give me one. SO that is out of the

question. I am thinking cheap treatmill this year and maybe next year a

better one, but with the money I owe right now I am going to be payign

medical bills along with $350 a month for meds and I just don't have

extra for exercise equipment. my food is costing me around $110 a week

as well as I have to eat different and more expensive foods too. All

this is adding up to alot more than I make.So I may just save up to buy

a bettter bed so I won't mind staying in it all the time if I have to.

Right now I am sleeping on a daybed that I have slept on for the last

4.5 years an I am thinking it is at least part of my back trouble. OUCH!

Maybe I will save my money and just buy the waterbed I have eyed for the

last year and a half I want.

Hey Val,

I was just remembering something I used to have and liked just as much as our

treadmill (when we had it :) and it cost a LOT less than the treadmill. It was

a rebounder...you know, a mini-trampoline? You get on that and just bounce to

begin with. It is absolutely great for lymph drainage and it's very low impact

so it's not hard on your back and you can work your arms at the same time. Mine

cost all of $11 from Ebay! Check it out. It might be something to consider! :)

>>I love water aerobics also if you have a Y or a gym near you that has a

pool.<<

Out of the question! I have not been able to go in pools since I was a child.

The chlorine used to induce asthma attacks then, now I could actually die from

that dose of it! I am highly sensitized to chemicals, chlorine in particular.

About the man, unless he looks cute like a kitty and is as silent as one... I

doubt I would tolerate him!

Well if I can't buy it on one of my charge cards, I can't buy it so I

will just start dancing again. I can do that! LOL For free. Maybe next

year I will reconsider my finanaces for something to keep me active

during the winter months when i can;t walk the dog. Last year I tried

going out in the clod but I fell that was the end of that. I couldn't

work for three days, and no work means no money. I can;t risk that this

year.

About the trampoline, I can't fathom bouncing on that for a full half hour. It

would make anyone dizzy after ten minutes...LOL! I've read articles about it and

they recommend ten minutes and not anymore, at a time. I've tried it and it

doesn't seem to be a form of aerobic activity but, Tradeau recommends it

for really boosting your immune system. Maybe that's how your ex-mother-in-law

conquered diabetes with it?

wrote:

While this sounds good, I am not that sedentary. I am in better physical shape

than most women at 40. I do wrestle with 150+ pound dogs and lift them into my

tub and brush and stand and walk all day at work. It is not a desk job! LOL And

unfortunately that window when my Diabetes might have been controlled by diet &

exercise, my doctor took from me by not informing me of my high sugar three

years ago. Also I have lost over 90 pounds the last year & a half so it is not

like I haven't pulled the easy weight off. I have not been able to do sit ups

since I was 15 years old for the pain they cause me. And I was an acrobat and a

ballet dancer then. While grooming has kept me fairly fit for my age, it has

also beat the HELL out of me over the years from injuries. Most groomers retire

to a more sedentary job LONG before they have been at it as long as I have been.

I only know ONE other groomer that has been grooming as long as I have out of

the 2000 or so I know online! And she

hasn't quite caught me by one year! LOL

MIne is Disco Sweat, LOL!!!! With top hit dancing songs like...Disco

Inferno, Last Dance, Carwash,..... Do i sound like a commercial yet?

Tried walking outside today, I feel like my lungs just can't get

enough air going up the hills. Maybe I need to stick to dancing.

Hey Val,

I'm not sure if you've decided for sure that dancing is the way to go, but I

thought I'd tell you that yesterday I saw an exercise bike for $100 and a

mini-tramp for $20. Now I hate the place and everything it stands for, but

every once in a while I break down and pick up something there 'cause it's

cheap! It was at Walmart. I bought an exercise bike there after my knee

surgery and it has held up pretty well. I am thinking about getting the

mini-tramp! Anyway, I was thinking that they do take credit cards, and if

you purchased either and regretted it, at least they are pretty good at

taking returns ... probably easier than returning to FH! Something to think

about, though I do think just entering that damn store is adrenal

challenging LOL!
