I haven't had to have cataract surgery yet, but one of my brothers and

one of my sisters had to have this surgery following their cataract

surgery. It's called a YAG. It does seem to be a common thing for many

people.

Thanks, Sue! I'll google it and see if I can find out what it is. I

dread it. I also dread at some point in having the cataract surgery on

my other eye. Right now I have almost no vision in the right eye and

for whatever reason, the left one that had the surgery has become cloudy

again. That's what the surgery is supposed to fix, so says the

surgeon's assistant when she called me to schedule it.

Well, I'm so thrilled that I took prednisone and it gave me cataracts.

I did find info on it, thanks to you, Sue, once I knew what it was called.

Now I have to worry about a detached retina from the laser surgery.

God, I would give anything if I had never taken that prednisone. And

the worst part is I will have to go through the same thing again when I

get the right cataract fixed. :-(

Nina,

Go ahead and google it and set your mind at ease. It's a quick, simple

procedure, as I understand it, nothing at all to worry about. I don't

think it takes much time at all.

I've had cataract surgery on both eyes, then the YAG procedure later

for the cloudiness that forms on the membrane that holds the new lens

in. I wouldn't call it surgery, tho - just sit in a chair, stare at a

light, and see sort of a flash, and it's over. No problem.

Roselyn

ps - mine was from old age I think, not from prednisone.

I had the same experience as you, Roselyn. Both surgeries were easy.

Mine wasn't caused by either prednisone or old age. I was only 47 at

the time. I didn't start taking pred until I was 50. I'm sure it was

due to the disease, even though they say it's not typical.

Take care,

Roselyn, thanks! That eases my mind a lot. I asked the doc if I was

his youngest patient (I was 55 at the time). He said no, he had done

cataract surgery on a 12 year old. I asked him why and he said it was

from prednisone.

Upon examination he decided I did not need the surgery. Said my eyes

are just way too dry, even using the meds (I have Sjogren's Syndrome).

Said the strain on my left eye because of the right eye is making the

left one work really hard. I have no vision in the right eye. Couldn't

even see the E at the top of the chart whether it was on the wall or

trying to read it up close. So I'm scheduled to do the pre-op appt. mid

July. Oh goody. Can't wait to have that surgery again. :-(

+++Hi Arlene. If you are completely on my program, it is possible to correct

your eyes so you wouldn't need surgery. Cataracts are caused by lack of proper

nutrition.

I am going to have cataract surgery done in 2 weeks. Has anyone had this

done while having cll and what was the outcome? I assume there is more

chance for infection. My dr has cleared me so counts and platelets should be

ok. I hope I don't have to worry about dry eye or tear problems. Has anyone

had any experience with this?

Thanks Mike

I

know quite a few people who have had cataract surgery and know no one who has

ever experienced a problem with it. It has become straightforward. Just be

sure to wear UV-blocking sunglasses whenever you’re in the sun afterwards.

Best

wishes,

I also had catarac surgery on both eyes some 3 yeas ago, can't remember exact dates, all was well and smooth, I remember doing a lot of research at the time, but my memory has faded.

I remember how amazing it was to be able to see so clearly and no longer need glasses for working on the computer.

Betty,

There's no need to dread cataract surgery; it's a piece of cake. Just

make sure that you get a doctor that has done lots of the surgeries. I

had my surgeries in March of 2008, and by the next day, I was seeing

much better than I ever had at a distance. I was always extremely

nearsighted before, but chose distance lenses. I can see how to drive

without glasses, but have to wear glasses for close vision, such as

reading. I had absolutely no pain and no trouble. So I wish you the

same good fortune.

The only aggravating thing was not being able to read until both eyes

had been done and had settled down. The doctor would not fit me for

new glasses until then. If I had it to do over, I would schedule the

two surgeries closer together.

I totally agree with Sue. I had both done and no problems. I can now see to

drive without glasses but need them for reading. I had mine both done near the

end of 2006 because I had already met my deductible and most of the surgery

expenses were covered. I even had one done early in the am when my boss was on

vacation so I had to go back to the office afterward and answer

phones,,,,,,,,,,,,,back in the days when I had

insurance.....LOL...........anyway it is over quickly and the biggest pain was

having to put eye drops in so often.

Good luck with it all
