Dear Gillian and everyone else

Sorry but I have been away from my pc for a time and have missed out on the

news but yes I am off the MTX and feel 100% better.

I have moved to France and saw a specialist that had treated me earlier and

immed she took me off mtx and prescribed soriatane, and in conjunction with

creams and sorting out one's stress and problems in life I am even walking

around in shorts!!!!!!!!!!!

I will hopefully have my pc soon......

take care

I don't know if it will help you, but my doctor put me on Colchicine for the

swelling. My knees would swell to the point I didn't have any slack in my

jeans, and normal was about 2 " of room. It's primarily a gout medicine, as I

understand it. Maybe it can help you.

cannot believe I forgot, but- I did, and I did not want to switch what day I

took it so I skipped it once I relaized I forgot to take it. YIKES It took

awhile for it to help, but gosh it stoppped helping FAST. I had forgotten

just how miserable I had been before. (I do not believe I could have

forgotten that, either)

also have LOTS more awake time and less fatigue- at least for the moment---

> Now I am wondering gosh- do I live with the pain and swelling or go with

the less awake time and more energy?

> Hubby and kids voted for less pain, I guess they remember betetr than me

just how awful it was for me before. Hubby thinks maybe it is like

childbirth pain, I quickly forgot just HOW awful it was.

After complaining of intolerable side effects POSSIBLY caused by MTX,

my 79-yr-old Mother's Dr. has decided to stop MTX for 3 wks to see if

she feels any better. The MTX was previously lowered to the lowest

possible dose of 7.5 mg. taken by injection. She takes folic acid, but

the only other drug she is taking for her RA is Medrol. Both Enbrel

and Humira were discontinued due to side effects. I am curious

as to what the plan is? Can one be treated for RA w/corticosteroids

alone? My major concern is that if she stops the MTX and has a flare,

then what? If it takes 6 wks for MTX to affect one's RA symptoms,

short of high does of Medrol, what can be done for her during that

period?

Has anyone else here had a treatment plan like this imposed by their

Rheumatologist?

Treating RA with steroids alone is not recommended. Some sort of DMARD

should be used. Steroids have very limited disease-modifying potential and,

when used chronically, can produce very serious side effects.

Getting a second opinion from another rheumatologist might be the way to go.

Hi,

Within the past 2-3 months, I too, have developed side effects from the

injectible methotrexate, and am thinking of stopping it. But I am also on

Remicade, and I believe the Remicade supposedly works better along with the

mtx. So, I was wondering if anyone out there is on Remicade without the

mtx, and if so, how are you doing?

Are there any other things I can do to relieve the nausea if I continue mtx?

I've already reduced the dosage of mtx and increased the folic acid (with my

rheumy's approval), and that didn't help. I have another call into her to

talk to her again, but I know you guys always have great suggestions, too!

Thanks.

Patty

I was told by my rheumy that you have to take methotrexate when you're

on Remicade. That's why he said Remicade was not an option for me,

since my body doesn't like methotrexate. So he put me on Enbrel, and

it's doing a super job for me.

Patty,

You can use Remicade without MTX, but it's not recommended. If you can't

tolerate MTX, your rheumatologist may suggest another DMARD, possibly Arava

(leflunomide).

Without MTX or another DMARD, the risk of Remicade infusion reactions

increases. It's also possible that, without a DMARD like MTX, Remicade will

begin to lose its effectiveness. One of the theories about why this is so is

that MTX suppresses the formation of anti-Remicade antibodies.
