French virologist calls for use of therapeutic vaccines in AIDS

treatment

Luc Montagnier, a French virologist who helped to first identify

HIV, seen here in June 2006, said that antiretroviral drugs should

be combined with a therapeutic vaccine to revive an AIDS patient's

immune system.

Luc Montagnier, a French virologist who helped to first identify

HIV, said that antiretroviral drugs should be combined with a

therapeutic vaccine to revive an AIDS patient's immune system.

" Our proposal is that after a relatively short triple therapy, we

add immunostimulators, antioxidants and a therapeutic vaccine to

make the immune system of the sick person control the viral

infection, " Montagnier said.

Vaccine therapy is the use of vaccines to protect the body against

one or several illnesses or to fight a disease by increasing

resistance.

" We know that triple therapy partially restores the immune system.

We therefore have to find the means to restore it to a better

state, " Montagnier said at the opening of a centre for biomolecular

research on AIDS in the Burkina Faso capital Ouagadougou. — AFP
