I was up till tonight doing an exercycle for 30 minutes but I hurt my knee and the bike irritated it. Any suggestions?? Kathy

Guest guest
Hello and welcome. If you go to the bottom of this (or any) message, there are links for newcomers that will help you alot. Your blood sugar is too high, and then it goes too low (probably what caused you to feel weird and faint). You are at risk of diabetic complications. It would really serve you well to do some reading in the books and links listed in the newcomers' section and learn more about your disease and how to control it. Gretchen Becker's book: The First Year with Type II Diabetes would probably be the best place to start. Are you on any medications? What did your doc tell you to do to control your blood suguar? Do you have a meter and are you testing frequently? Frequent testing will tell you how what you eat effects your blood sugar, and if you write everything down, you will learn alot. Drink LOTS of water and increase your exercise. This will help too. Sorry you had to join us, and glad you did. Well you just asked a bundle...I can recommend some reading...one of the members of the list just put a text he wrote for diabetic newbies in the group files yesterday....I think this is the perfect chance to point them out to you...go to... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/diabetes_int/files/ scroll down to " Holmen " and inside that folder is a file called My Speil 1 warnings...that would be a great place for you to start....then after you get a little bit of info under you belt start asking about the things you don't understand. Also look at the bottom of this post for the recommended reading and newbie links. I'm glad you found the group...sounds like you need a bit of help....welcome...I'm a kinda newbie too...I've been here just about 3 weeks....it's a great group. Guest guest
Hi, Whitstarx...you didn't give your name so this will have to do for now. Welcome to the list, sorry you had to join us ...but you'll get lots of help here. Your symptoms sound like you were having a hypoglycemic episode. What kind of education did you doctor give you? Do you have a glucometer? Are you testing? How often? What kind of diet modifications have you made? Are you on any medication? Did your doctor tell you what your A1C was? At the bottom of this page there's something called " bookmarks for newbies " or something similar. I strongly suggest you read Dr. Bernstein's book " Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solutions " by K. Bernstein, M.D. and the Gretchen Becker book ASAP. Also check out Dr. Bernstein's website...the URL is http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/index.shtml These books and the website will give you a good starting point. Feel free to ask anything...there are 500+ people on this list and we were all newbies once. Guest guest
Walking is good but if you have a trick knee that could be problematic. Water exercise is excellent if you have an indoor pool nearby. Is there a local Y? Guest guest
Hello Anne, I remember that A1C test mine was 9.6 or 9.8... I also had some done right there with the glucometer.. they was 13. something or 14 on a fasting test .. I know that's not good (i watched the nurse's face)... i'll get this under control soon. Thank you for your help Anne Darren. " An A1C is short for HbA1C. It's a test for glycolated hemoglobin (hopefully I spelled that right). What it measures is your average blood sugar over the past three months. It is a blood test that your doctor should order or maybe already did on you. Generally any result over 6.0, which correlates to an average blood sugar reading of 120,results in a diagnosis of diabetes " .

Guest guest
Darren, use the lowest effective setting on the lancet pen, do the sides of your fingertips rather than the front of them, and alternate fingers. That way it isn't bad at all. You're very lucky to have found this group right away. Keep asking questions and keep learning. It's the best way to master this disease before it masters you.
