Guest guest
Dwen, Welcome to the list. I haven't seen many suggestions for you on what to eat, but there are lots and lots of things that you can have. I have tried the almond brownie bars too and thought they were okay. I heard that warmed with AS'd whipped cream is wonderful. The one thing I would suggest is that you do the math on the possible true carb counts as you may or may not be sensitive to the glycerin that is in them. If you are, the carb count is higher than the stated value. This is even more true for the carb solution bars, which most people think taste better than Atkins bars. To let you know what I am talking about: 1 g of fat = 9 calories 1 g carb = 4 calories 1 g protein = 4 calories The Atkins chocolate peanut butter bar has 13 g of fat, 2.6* g carb, and 19 g protein. Now the calories, if you do the math would be 13 x 9 = 117 from fat, 2.6 x 4 = 10.4 from carbs, and 19 x 4 = 76 from protein. The total calories then should be 117 + 10.4 + 76 = 203.4 However, the bar lists 218 calories. 218 - 203.4 = 14.6 calories that are not accounted for. Now if you look at the carb count there is an * by it with an explanation that " polydextrose, xylitol and glycerine are omitted from the carb count as their impact on bloodsugar/insulin levels is negligible " . In other words, there are hidden carbs. The 14.6 divided by 4 calories per carb gram = 3.65 additional carbs. So add the 3.65 and the 2.6 that are listed and the true carb count is 6.25. Now that really isn't bad, but it could throw someone on induction way off. If memory serves, the almond brownie bars are even higher in carbs if you are sensitive to the glycerin. So what do you do? Pay attention, if you stop losing after eating an Atkins bar, you may need to limit your intake. If there is no change in weight/inches lost, don't worry about it. Hope this helps! Guest guest
, No problem with poking fun of the taste of Atkins bars, everyone has their own tastes and a lot of people will never like them in any flavor. Personally, I do keep them around, but I think I am crazy because for that price I could buy macadamia nuts or cheese, or meat or... and any of those things are better for us than the bars and tastier too. The one exception? Eggs - now I will take an Atkins bar over any type of egg cooked as an egg. Baked into something, wonderful, but just eggs? They give the macadamia nut bars a run for worst tasting food. LOL Just my opinion. Jean 190/138.5/130 12/7/

Guest guest
I love eggs. I don't always eat them for breakfast. I love an omelet for dinner or maybe a scrambled egg. Just had a boiled egg with my dinner. Isn't it wonderful that people are different. What a boring world it would be if we were all the same. :-) BTW, thanks for the information on the true carb counts. Thus far, I haven't had trouble with them. However, I don't eat them often. I use them for a quick way to get food into me when I'm on the run. I don't know why, but if I have a lot of things to do (errands to run), I leave home and then realize I forgot to eat breakfast. So I keep a bar in my bag. One thing I have noticed is that if I eat a salad I go out of ketosis. So I'm having to stay away from that for now. (And I love salads.) I just found out that I may have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). The doctor is running a full panel to make certain before he prescribes any medication. I am hoping if this is true that I might be able to lose weight a little more easily once it is under control. The doctor had me on a low fat diet and in order to lose weight I had to eat only 200-300 calories a day and was absolutely starving all day long. Sometimes I would just go to bed and go to sleep so I didn't have to feel the hunger pangs. This diet has been much easier. I think I still have had to lower my calories a lot more than most people might, but at least I'm not hungry (except at meal time like I am supposed to be). Are there any good snacks that I could have? I just want to crunch on something sometimes. However, I don't know if any are allowed on the induction phase. Guest guest
Dwen, You are lucky if you love eggs. I just have never liked eggs unless they were baked into something really yummy. Which explains why I needed to lose weight in the first place. If the Atkins bars are not causing problems for you, feel free to eat them in limited numbers. But as Terry would say, they are not as good for us as the " real " foods that we should be eating. I have them in a pinch, but not very often. Lucky for me that I can have the salads that you cannot eat. I love salads too and Laverne gave me a really good recipe for creamy parmesan dressing. I am waiting for her to return from Hawaii so she can repost it as it has been misplaced and I have finished the first batch. If you have an under active thyroid and get it under control, you should be able to lose fairly quickly I would think. I can't imagine trying to live on the 300 calorie LF diet that the doctor has had you on. The one thing that I do wonder about is why you want to worry about your calories on this WOL. Why count anything you don't need to count as long as you are losing. Fewer calories may be helpful, but it isn't worth counting on this WOE for most people. You have to get that low fat brainwashing out of your head. This is a WOE that not eating enough seems to be a more prevalent problem than the number of calories, at least until you are close to maintenance. Good snack ideas. I wish I would save some of those posts, it is a frequent topic on this WOE. Okay, here are some ideas, some will be more induction friendly than others: Macadamias, almonds, brazil nuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, string cheese, Kraft bags of cheese cubes (1 oz serving size & perfect for induction), ham slice wrapped around string cheese, celery sticks, radishes, raw cauliflower and broccoli with limited dip or ranch dressing, ham cubes, pepperoni chips (microwave until crispy, can eat with dip, great if salty crunchy cravings have you in their grasp), AS'd cream cheese (great in celery sticks), one T of real peanut butter, small serving of LC berries, jello with AS'd whipped cream, diet orange soda with 1-2 T of cream, deviled eggs. After induction is over there are all kinds of wonderful LC dessert ideas, but I would avoid them until close to goal, because they have set me on a path of being unable to stay legal for more than 3 days at a time. Hope this helps. Jean 190/140/130 12/7/98 Help!!! TOM & Christmas party self-sabotage hit at the same time!
