Vicki:

Diets are about as individual as the people using them. Although most of

us could do with a bit of fat and sodium restriction, for some, the

emphasis is on one or the other; for some, the emphasis is on calorie

restriction. Each person should have a diet tailored to his/her medical

requirements, the foods he/she likes/dislikes and his/her preferences in

cooking style (the no-meal-should-take-longer-than-thirty-seconds person

versus the person who enjoys taking three hours to fix something!). The

diet of a person with Type 2 diabetes may be different from that of a

person with Type 1. For example, although I've been told to keep the fat

and sodium down to a dull roar, my diet has no fat or sodium

restrictions and my calorie limit is a fairly hefty 2200 per day.

The most important thing you ought to learn whether you control with

diet alone, pills or insulin, is to count carbohydrates. This isn't as

tough as it sounds and there are plenty of folks on here who will tell

you more than you want to know about it. Just remember that when people

speak of a " carb choice " , they generally mean 15 grams of carbohydrate;

that each gram of carbohydrate and protein packs 4 calories of energy

and that each gram of fat packs 9 calories of energy. You can work out

percentages for carbohydrate, protein and fat from these values and your

diet specifications. There are other esoterica which you'll learn but

this is a start.

As for web sites, I can't remember what you've seen, so try the

following:

http://www.nfb.org/voice.htm

http://www.diabetes.org

http://www.joslin.org

http://www.mendosa.com

http://www.diabetes123.com

http://www.diabetesmonitor.com

http://www.diabetic.com

I forget the URL but if you go to Google and search for the NDIC

(National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse) of the National Institute

on Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of

Health, you'll find that. It has some great introductory pamphlets; if

you can't find them, I can send you a couple. They're in .PDF but Adobe

Reader 7 handles them just fine.

Please fell free to ask lots of questions; the only stupid questions are

the ones you don't ask!

Welcome!

some help from a diabetes educator. Does everyone recommend exactly the same

diet or are there variables according to the person? Also, does anyone put out

materials in braille or on tape that any of you know of? The website referred

to before seems terrific. Answers would be appreciated, I will be lurking

around and just looking for relevant stuff.

Vicki:

The national Braille Press puts out the Atkins Carobhydrate Gram

Counter in braille. You don't have to be an Atkins freak to find this

useful.

The National Federation of the Blind has the diabetic exchange list for

2003 of the American Diabetes Association in braille.

Hi Vicki and welcome to the list!

I'm Danny, and I have been a type 1 diabetic for 45 years. I live in

Atlanta, GA along with my lovely wife and two wonderful daughters. I am

lurking in the background also and gleaning a wealth of useful info from

the super members of this great list.

Welcome Vicky

As you are a new diabetic, you will need to see how many carbs you can eat

and still keep your blood sugars down under 120. Most of us recommend you

test first thing in the morning and then 2 hours after you eat. The 2 hour

post-pranial test tells you if you are eating too many carbs for the amount

of medication you are receiving. Are you on medication? There are talking

glucoemeters as well as some that have large print. You will need to have

your diabetic educator show you what is available. Hopefully, you are going

to an endocrinologist who has a diabetic educators help you initially.

just go to the properties of her original post and you can see her email address

in it. In outlook express, just press alt+enter and then control+tab one time

and you'll be in a text box that you can read down. Towards the bottom it will

have subject, date, and from with her email address.

That way, you just copy it and email her off list the article.
