Guest guest
Dear Colleagues, Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) play an important role in various developmental issues across the states in India. As per the data available with the planning commission (1) there are 12265 NGOs in the country. All levels of policy making have stressed the importance of building the capacity of NGOs to face the developmental challenge. Workshops, training programmes, and formal course work in universities building capacity of NGO's have high costs and limited coverage. Therefore, to complement these efforts, UNAIDS has partnered with the Indira Gandhi Open University to launch a distance education programme for financial and managerial capacity building of NGOs in the health sector, particularly those engaged in HIV prevention and care. Starting with a six-month certificate programme middle of next year, IGOU will offer advanced courses over time, depending on feedback and user needs. As on March 31, 2005, the University had an effective network of 48 regional centres, 6 sub-regional centres and about 1200 study centres all over the country. Besides these, the University has 35 partner institutions in 30 countries. In brief, IGNOU is mandated to democratize higher education and provide equal access to education and training to a large cross-section of people in India and abroad. We seek the assistance of community members for the following: 1. Suggestions on the course content (Please see the initial draft at the end of this mail). This will be finalized in a workshop of experts, NGO representatives, activists with experience and contributing suggestions needing follow-up, some time end-January. 2. Resource material that should be placed at the study centers (e.g. Acts and Rules, samples Articles of association of various kinds of Societies, simple to use books and manuals on management training, proposal writing manuals with sample proposal and budgets etc.) 3. On-line, i.e. internet based resources 4. Course material on these subjects, particularly in Indian Languages (The programme will develop and provide the curriculum in local language in due course). Dr Neeti Agarwal, Faculty of Management, IGNOU, neeti@... also on this list, will collate the responses. Coordinating from UNAIDS, I will be assisting her.
