We rank well below the top 10, perhaps even the top 20 in terms of outcomes of the care we provide. What we are number one for is the cost of that care. We outrank every other nation in the world in terms of what it costs to provide care, yet we have subpar results. I would also urge you to recheck your figures regarding the number of uninsured individuals. It is now over 47 million and growing in our current economic climate. We are all literally one job loss away from becoming one of those individuals. To advocate for trashing the entire proposal because you don't like the fact that Congress has a super duper health plan is short-sighted and childish at best. Am I happy with Congress's health insurance? Heck, no. I wish I had that coverage. But I also wish that my neighbors who are now unemployed did not have to make choices such as " do we pay the rent or do we go to the doctor? " I'll give Congress their pretty plan if it means I can also get my neighbors any plan. Hopefully through meaningful and respectful discussion we can maybe get Congress to give up a perk or two. How about joining the discussion armed with correct information and a desire to provide even basic health care for every man, woman, and child in the U.S.? Guest guest
I second . The bill must be read in order to be informed. L. Audley, M.S., R.D., L.D. Cleveland Clinic; Cleveland, Ohio In a message dated 8/13/2009 4:02:18 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, drowell@... writes: Clearly you haven't read the pages of the bill that I referenced. You must, in order to be informed. I can only tell you " yes it is " in there. Read it for yourself. Having a government committee versus a free market committee within a health insurance company that I can choose are two different things. If you don't understand the free market versus government monopoly, the discussion is useless. The cost of catastrophic care and the cost of catastrophic care insurance are two different things. I can get this insurance for my family for $450 - 680/month, or so. Deductibles are $5000 to 11000. I could easily save the deductable, if I had the money my State plan spends on my health care insurance added to what I currently pay for my current low deductible insurance. I could use a Health Savings Account and what I don't use this year, adds up for subsequent years. I would much prefer it! W. THE $64,000 QUESTION WAS ASKED./healthcare reform- pages , You are misinformed. There will be no government committee that decides what healthcare you get or not. Actually, I'm sure you are aware that at this point in time if you have insurance, your carrier DOES have a committee that decides what you get or not? There will be no access to your bank accounts. There will be no uniform ID (although, I'm sure you're aware that without some way of identifying patients we cannot have a truly interoperable system, meaning that if you are traveling and have an urgent health care need, there is no way to communicate with your providers at home?). Health care is rationed now, it's just done by insurers who have a bottom line profit motive as their best interest. Please let's be more rational in this discussion. The bullet points you list here are obviously not from the actual discussion. Regarding your comment that you'd love to simply use your own funds for health care, I'm sure you have hundred of thousands of dollars available, as that's the current cost for treating a catastrophic illness. pam Pam Charney PhD, RD Clinical Coordinator Graduate Coordinated Program in Dietetics Lecturer, Department of Epidemiology Nutrition Sciences Program School of Public Health and Community Medicine Box 353410, 306-C Raitt Hall Affiliate Associate Professor School of Pharmacy MS Student Clinical Informatics and Patient Centered Technology School of Nursing University of Washington Seattle, WA _charnepa@..._ (mailto:charnepa@...) <mailto:charnepa%mailto:charnepamai> _http://www.linkedinhttp://www.linkeht_'>http://www.linkedinhttp://www.linkeht_ (http://www.linkedin.com/in/pamcharney) " The person who says it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it " - Ethel Kennedy > Well said, .
