Guest guest
[diabetic-family-circle] Statement of the American Diabetes Association on Senator Frist's Endorsement of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act Press Release Source: American Diabetes Association Statement of the American Diabetes Association on Senator Frist's Endorsement of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act Friday July 29, 11:23 am ET ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The President of the American Diabetes Association, A. Rizza, MD of the Mayo Clinic and Foundation, today issued the following statement in response to Senator Frist's floor statement in support of the " Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005 " (S.471/H.R.810): " The American Diabetes Association applauds this morning's statement by Majority Leader Frist announcing his support of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. By easing existing restrictions and supporting research that uses embryonic stem cells -- while also implementing strong ethical guidelines -- this legislation provides hope to the more than 18 million Americans living with diabetes. In May, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the legislation with clear, bipartisan support, and public opinion polls show a strong majority of Americans support it, as well. The Senate should follow the bipartisan lead of the House of Representatives and immediately pass a clean version of this legislation and send it to the President. Majority Leader Frist's support of this legislation is vital to its passage in the Senate, and the Association calls on him to give the legislation an up or down vote when the Senate returns from its August recess. The Senate has an opportunity to help advance the search for better treatments and a cure for diabetes. With Dr. Frist's support, it is an opportunity that will not be wasted. " Diabetes is one of this nation's most prevalent, debilitating, deadly and costly diseases. While 18.2 million Americans live with diabetes today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in three Americans born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime. In 2002, one in 10 healthcare dollars went towards diabetes care. The cost of diabetes in America in 2002 was at least $132 billion. The American Diabetes Association is the nation's leading voluntary health organization supporting diabetes research, information and advocacy. The Association's mission is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Founded in 1940, the Association provides service to hundreds of communities across the country. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source: American Diabetes Association http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/050729/dcf019.html?.v=19 love ya, night spirit " During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act. Guest guest
I don't applaud the decision made by the Senate Majority leader, and am disappointed in the lack of attention the hope adult stem cells offer for a diabetes cure. I think it's a mistake to get your hopes up if you are thrilled by this unwise decision because no matter, destroying a life to save another is not just immoral, but senseless. Guest guest
For sure Dave. Adult stem cells are the way to go. I would not accept twenty twenty vision if it had to come from taking the life of another human being! Rita > Well, I agree, I have no wish to be involved in any debate over this issue. I must say though that it is not really a red or blue issue as some may think, since according to many polls 60% of Americans do not approve of aportion. You say that the hope adult stem cell lines seemed to have a few years ago has not materialized, I would add, yet. Besides, many scientists are now more optimistic about what hope adult stem cells may do and less optimistic about what embbryonic stem cells have to offer. > > Dave > > > [diabetic-family-circle] Statement of the American Diabetes Association on Senator Frist's Endorsement of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act > > > > > > > > Press Release Source: American Diabetes Association > > > > > > Statement of the American Diabetes Association on Senator Frist's Endorsement of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act > > Friday July 29, 11:23 am ET > > > > > > ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The President of the American Diabetes Association, A. Guest guest
Wow, that's neat. But I think I'll wait until the bugs have been worked out of them and we know they are safe. I don't like the idea of being half cyborg to survive (i.e., having a computer making these decisions), at least not until it's the " standard " treatment for diabetes like injections and the pump are today. I think the pump itself sounds much more convenient and flexible than shots, but I'd still like to do the decision-making. A computer has no way of knowing that I plan on exercising in an hour and need to decrease my insulin (and WANT to be on the high side before I start), or that I'm having a sick day and need more insulin (this is assuming it's completely automatic with measuring sugar and dosing insulin).
