Guest guest
Related to the comment that having healthcare depends on having a job. Years ago people did not have health care insurance with their jobs. My father had 4 kids and paid for it without insurance, all our illness, any surgeries, etc. Before everyone jumps on this - I understand it cost much less then, BUT salaries were much less also. He was a blue collar worker who put the health and welfare of his family before all else. How many people today who " can't afford healthcare " are buying things they really could live without?? Cell phones, iPods, cigarettes, beer, etc. How about setting priorities? We have become an out of control entitlement society. Over the years such " benefits " as health care, vacation, holidays were used as incentives to attract employees. I realize that this discussion includes individuals of all ages - I suspect our perspective varies based on age. Kathy Kathy C. When did this country become " what's in it for me? " I am lucky to be offered decent healthcare at my job. But I had to pay $100 more dollars a month this year to keep it... my raise didn't even cover that. But at least I have health insurance. It's truly sad that we live in a system where having healthcare depends on you needing to have a job. What about consultants, say RD's? Wouldn' t it be nice if we didn't have to worry about keeping FT employment to have health benefits...think about all the opportunities that would open up to us for doing different things. Guest guest
Okay... let's think about this. I could give up everything I own and still probably not afford care for my child if he say... broke his leg on accident. or god forbid had a chronic illness. That's why so many people are going bankrupt... and these are people that are paying for insurance and thought they had coverage for such things, only to have their insurance say... " Nope, not covering it. " Healthcare is rationed now the way it is... The insurance companies that are out to make a profit are the ones that are benefitting. In terms of your father... doctors took advantage of more natural ways to fix things. Not everyone ran out to get antibiotics for a sneeze, etc. Technology is great... but sometimes we overdo... Rationing is a scary word, but perhaps there could be a benefit of trying things that work that are less costly. It's a shame the waste out there. A patient told me today that he didn't understand why he has to get a new cover everytime he fills his prescription for an inhaler... why can he just get the mediciine and put it into the cover that he already has... Well, because everyone gets paid to order that new cover.. (excuse me, I'm not sure of the terminology. I personally trust the gov't to do a better job in this area since they are a not for profit. I realize that other people don't trust the government and that is OK. But, let's have the choice available for both. There have been efforts to bring all discussions to the table. Insurance companies, doctors, patients, nurses, a variety of people in the healthcare arena. I don't think it's black and white. I think we can have solutions that meet everyone's needs. But just saying that something won't work without giving it a try isn't the way either. Some of it starts with us as patients. We need to take care of ourselves... and we're lucky as dietitians to know the importance of that... but not everyone does and we take that for granted. There needs to be more education and prevention. On Thu, Aug 13, 2009 at 4:13 PM, Kathy C. Guest guest
Pam: I chose to take the time to respond in detail since I feel very passionately about this topic. Universal healthcare is not the issue relative to my brother. Following the law is. The government stealing his pension and benefits to give to others is. Getting people to work and stimulating the economy in a meaningful way is. I will say again statistics can be misleading. The manner in which information is reported is inconsistent. Is there another country in the world where the " Octo Mom " and her 8 very premature infants would have received such care?? What sense does it make to reform an entire system (305 million) when only - and for the sake of argument let's say, 38 million Americans are uninsured( I heard the President say that yesterday). What countries in the world have such stellar results, and why are US Medical facilities the destination of choice from those around the world? Without knowing where you are getting your information it is difficult to reply to the statistics. I understand the infant mortality rate. Individuals with diabetes may not receive care - but what % is related to accessibility and what % to the fact they do not even know they have the condition? It is a known fact that many Americans do not know they have diabetes, even though they have health insurance. I have a good friend whose husband's family owns a small business in Iowa. She is responsible for the HR department and decided to initiate a wellness program. They did a simple screening for blood sugar, lipid profile, Ht, Wt, BMI and BP. (I call it the KISS method of corporate wellness). Based on the results the company sent 13 people directly for treatment. How much money did that simple process save AND how much pain and suffering did it prevent for those employees. By the way, she was advised that she could not mandate the employees to submit to the testing - it was a violation of their rights!!! If every corporation took the initiative to provide this simple service to their employees, and the employees were smart enough to take advantage of the service, just think the money that would be saved. I do know that if the government passes the current HR 3200 the facilities currently providing excellent care at lower costs will be decimated. Why not take all the uninsured CITIZENS and legal residents and put them into the same group plan/plans as the government employees?? That would lower the cost considerably. But leave the rest of us alone. There is absolutely no way we need an 1100 page health care reform bill. Since US health care is so inferior, will you be heading somewhere overseas if you need treatment??? Kathy C. THE $64,000 QUESTION WAS ASKED. Kathy, I'm glad you have the time to respond in such detail. All I will say is that if we had universal coverage your brother wouldn't be without health insurance. If you are lacking health insurance, try to get an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic or Mayo Clinic. I'm aware that both provide charity care but that pot of money is shrinking rapidly and very difficult to access if you happen to have a costly condition. Unless we have meaningful discussion, none of the issues you raise will be fixed. Would you rather continue as we are and thus have fodder for ranting and raving or would you rather begin the arduous process of improving care. There are now over 20 nations that have better health outcomes than we do. We are not even in the top 10 in infant mortality rates (meaning that there are over 10 countries that have lower infant mortality than we do). We rank lower than 15th in terms of other health outcomes. Let's just look at one example; fewer than 50% of individuals who have diabetes receive care at even what is considered minimal by health standards.
Kathy C. Guest guest
The 47 million uninsured number is misleading.....  According to the Census Bureau, 18 million of those have incomes of more than $50,000/year and could afford coverage but have chosen not to purchase it.  Most of them are young, and therefore feel they can do without it.  12.6 million are illegal aliens.....  8 million are under the age of 18.... for those, there are already public insurance options like SCHIP but their parents haven't signed them up.   The remaining 8.4 uninsured.... some of them could qualify for medicare or medicaid but haven't signed up.  This number is 3% of the population..... should we throw the entire health care system in the trash because of 3% of the population? Why not just fix the items that need fixing? The whole system doesn't need to be scrapped.  That's the breakdown that most websites have described.  Here is another one from a senator's office, which is somewhat similar, indicating that 12 million Americans don't have affordable options.   Again, let's not overhaul what works for most Americans, and focus on helping the small % of Americans that need it.   http://risch.senate.gov/public/?p=BreakdownoftheUninsured    > Jan: I could not agree with you more. Here is another one from a senator's office, which is somewhat similar, indicating that 12 million Americans don't have affordable options. Again, let's not overhaul what works for most Americans, and focus on helping the small % of Americans that need it. http://risch. <http://risch.senate.gov/public/?p=BreakdownoftheUninsured> senate.gov/public/?p=BreakdownoftheUninsured > Jan: I could not agree with you more. Most of them are young, and therefore feel they can do without it. 12.6 million are illegal aliens..... 8 million are under the age of 18.... for those, there are already public insurance options like SCHIP but their parents haven't signed them up. Guest guest
Heck, what would it cost to just buy the 3% health insurance with tax dollars? Just a drop in the bucket, compared to the price tag of what's being planned! W. Rowell, RD, LN Montana State Hospital, Warm Spring, MT Consultant Dietitian, Long Term Care Certified LEAP Therapist Quote Worthy: " We are a nation that has a government -- not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the earth. Our government has no power except that granted to it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government, which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed.
