Guest guest
Pam, With all due respect, I agree with Jan and Kathy. Have you actually read the proposed health care bill ? I have been reading through it (it's long, but easily accessible on-line)...and there are major reasons to be concerned if it passes. I am not against doing something for the uninsured. But I am totally against the way it is being done. You suggested that Kathy join the discussion " armed with correct information " . Perhaps you should read the bill so that you will have the correct information. Audley, M.S., R.D., L.D. Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio In a message dated 8/13/2009 2:18:39 P.M. Our government starting with the President should be placed on this new health care program first. If it works, then they can sign the rest of us up!!! My question is why overhaul the entire system when a small number are truly uninsured and can not afford it. Remove the illegals, those who choose not to be insured and those who do not bother to sign up for benefits and an estimated 5 to 10 million working poor are actually uninsured and require the help. Why not just address these people?? Just another power grab by the government. I realize there are many problems with our current system however we still do have the best health care in the world. Guest guest
Kathy, With all due respect, the U.S. most certainly does not have the best health care system in the world. We rank well below the top 10, perhaps even the top 20 in terms of outcomes of the care we provide. What we are number one for is the cost of that care. We outrank every other nation in the world in terms of what it costs to provide care, yet we have subpar results. Guest guest
Very well said Pam. I can't believe how many RD's who work in healthcare system honestly feel that our system is the best healthcare in the world? When did this country become " what's in it for me? " I am lucky to be offered decent healthcare at my job. But I had to pay $100 more dollars a month this year to keep it... my raise didn't even cover that. But at least I have health insurance. It's truly sad that we live in a system where having healthcare depends on you needing to have a job. What about consultants, say RD's? Wouldn' t it be nice if we didn't have to worry about keeping FT employment to have health benefits...think about all the opportunities that would open up to us for doing different things. > > > Kathy, > > With all due respect, the U.S. most certainly does not have the best > health care system in the world. Guest guest
, Don't assume that I haven't. It's over 1000 pages. I haven't gotten through it all, not by a long shot. However, it is rather presumptuous on your part to assume that I haven't read it or am somehow less informed than you might be. That's the type of behavior that we need to avoid and engage in meaningful discussion based on facts. There are parts of the bill that I don't like. However, I'm not going to give up on reform just because I personally don't like parts of the bill. That's the beauty of Democracy. However, a true democracy requires that folks be ready to compromise in order to ensure that basic needs of all are met. Guest guest
If I could opt out of my State provided health care insurance and use the same money for HSAs and catastrophic care, I would. We DO have the best healthcare in the world. I don't see anyone leaving the country to get better care or faster service. I see just the opposite. If we could get the government out of our current health care, it would be dramatically better. What does government run better than the private sector? Amtrak, postal service? Of course not. They don't have to make a profit. That's why the private option will go away. They won't be able to compete. The government can just take all the money they need from the taxpayer to keep it going, poor service or not. Guest guest
It's been said before then. Let those who need the public option have at it. If it's not competitive, it won't be popular and then health insurance companies don't have to worry about it. Why are we as a free market enterprise afraid of it. It's just another option for people to have. You don't have to have it. It's not going to be free for others, it's just another healthcare option? I don't know if you can really compare the post office and amtrak. It's sort of like apples and oranges. Fedex and UPS do just fine, and then there's the post office that you can use if you want to. I personally like the service at the post office. It's not for everyone but it's an option. I'm certain we'll all be using Medicare at some point? It's not a perfect system, but it's better than trying to find private insurance on your own when you are older and have preexisitng conditions. > > > If I could opt out of my State provided health care insurance and use the > same money for HSAs and catastrophic care, I would. Guest guest
Pam: I apologize in advance for the length of this reply - it could have been much longer. Where in the world can an individual get better care? I absolutely agree with you that the cost of our health care is outrageous - twice that of any other developed country. However, let's look at why. Do you think that maybe malpractice and lawsuits are adding obscene amounts of money to our care? There is no tort reform in the current proposal. WHY? That should be number one on the list. What about fraud? It is so rampant in the Medicare/Medicaid system it adds billions of dollars every year. How about controlling that? The government currently runs Medicare and Medicaid and does a pathetic job of controlling fraud. EX: a dentist in NY that billed for 928 procedures in one day. I'd rather have a CZAR overseeing that than making decisions for any of our citizens regarding personal health care. Who wrote this bill - does anyone know? Politicians and God only knows who else. Do you think that it might be more responsible for the government to convene a task force of Health Care Professionals to identify the problems with the current system and then make recommendations for improvement? Why is this bunch ram roding this thru the Congress without giving the citizens of the country time to READ IT( what a novel thought) and comment on it. This is our health and our tax dollars NOT the government's. As far as our members of Congress what have they done to deserve such health care? It is hardly short sighted or childish to believe that ALL Americans are created equally and deserve the same care. As far as outcomes the survival rates for many forms of cancer and other diseases are much higher here in the US. Statistics are very misleading and can be interpreted in many ways. As far as the numbers go, I agree that more people are becoming uninsured due to unemployment. However, I do not consider illegals part of the number - we should not reward people for breaking US law. I also do not consider those that are working and could have a policy but choose not to part of the number. Personal responsibility has been totally lost. The government and bankruptcy courts have contributed to MANY newly uninsured individuals by making rulings that I believe are unlawful and unconstitutional. Let me give you an example. My brother worked for GM for over 20 years and was then spun of as Delphi. His pension and health care was guaranteed. Then Delphi went into bankruptcy and the judge ruled against the salaried employees. They have lost their pensions and their healthcare. The Union employees did not. The governments " controlled bankruptcy's of the auto company's have been unlawful and broken the law. They are paying back their supporters at the detriment of those who should have been first in line. I do not want the government becoming any more involved in the lives of US citizens. Now why not take some very successful US models and pattern reform after them. The Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic are two of the top rated facilities in the world - excellent outcomes with lower costs. Or how about listening to Mr. Burd the CEO of Safeway, who by the way has addressed our esteemed Senators regarding the Health Care Program he has instituted at Safeway for his employees. Since 2005 with the new initiative they have held their costs FLAT!!! While health care has increased at an average of what maybe 40% over this time? Safeway promotes wellness and prevention and recognizes that we need to insist on personal responsibility since 70% of costs are behavior and lifestyle driven. I agree that it is important to have correct information. I have yet to see it come out of Washington. I do not want socialized medicine - that is the eventual intent. My Father - A WWII Vet would be dead today in most countries - esp. in Europe and Canada, and if this proposed plan had been in effect the last 5 years. I do not want anyone in Washington dictating his care. I have been reading the actual bill. I also have been listening to the philosophical opinions previously stated by those involved in this reform. When you take into account all the information available, it is frightening at best. Lastly before taking anything as gospel from the White House consider the " Stimulus " . I heard the President actually say last week - with a straight face - that they passed a $787 billion dollar stimulus package with " NO PORK OR EARMARKS " !!! Have you read that one??? Did anyone??? Just look at the trash in that bill for Pelosi's district. I sure want them determining my health care. Thanks for the lively debate. Kathy Kathy C. THE $64,000 QUESTION WAS ASKED. I would also urge you to recheck your figures regarding the number of uninsured individuals. It is now over 47 million and growing in our current economic climate. We are all literally one job loss away from becoming one of those individuals. To advocate for trashing the entire proposal because you don't like the fact that Congress has a super duper health plan is short-sighted and childish at best. Am I happy with Congress's health insurance? Heck, no. I wish I had that coverage. But I also wish that my neighbors who are now unemployed did not have to make choices such as " do we pay the rent or do we go to the doctor? We rank well below the top 10, perhaps even the top 20 in terms of outcomes of the care we provide. What we are number one for is the cost of that care. But I also wish that my neighbors who are now unemployed did not have to make choices such as " do we pay the rent or do we go to the doctor?
Guest guest
The choice will go away because the private sector can't compete against a government that doesn't have to compete. It will be a government monopoly. You asked, " Why are we as a free market enterprise afraid of it. " Uh, because it would no longer be " free market enterprise " . Government intrusion into the market ends the " free market " . Free market by definition is free from government intervention. W. THE $64,000 QUESTION WAS ASKED. It's just another option for people to have. You don't have to have it. It's not going to be free for others, it's just another healthcare option? Guest guest
Kathy, I'm glad you have the time to respond in such detail. All I will say is that if we had universal coverage your brother wouldn't be without health insurance. If you are lacking health insurance, try to get an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic or Mayo Clinic. I'm aware that both provide charity care but that pot of money is shrinking rapidly and very difficult to access if you happen to have a costly condition. Unless we have meaningful discussion, none of the issues you raise will be fixed. Would you rather continue as we are and thus have fodder for ranting and raving or would you rather begin the arduous process of improving care. There are now over 20 nations that have better health outcomes than we do. We are not even in the top 10 in infant mortality rates (meaning that there are over 10 countries that have lower infant mortality than we do). We rank lower than 15th in terms of other health outcomes. Let's just look at one example; fewer than 50% of individuals who have diabetes receive care at even what is considered minimal by health standards. Regards, pam Pam Charney pcharney@...
Guest guest
Related to the comment that having healthcare depends on having a job. Years ago people did not have health care insurance with their jobs. My father had 4 kids and paid for it without insurance, all our illness, any surgeries, etc. Before everyone jumps on this - I understand it cost much less then, BUT salaries were much less also. He was a blue collar worker who put the health and welfare of his family before all else. How many people today who " can't afford healthcare " are buying things they really could live without?? Cell phones, iPods, cigarettes, beer, etc. How about setting priorities? We have become an out of control entitlement society. Over the years such " benefits " as health care, vacation, holidays were used as incentives to attract employees. I realize that this discussion includes individuals of all ages - I suspect our perspective varies based on age. Kathy Kathy C.
THE $64,000 QUESTION WAS ASKED. THE $64,000 QUESTION WAS ASKED.
