I can't think of any other questions offhand but if it helps any, I had both endometriosis and a medium sized fibroid - same symptoms as you. Had both removed via laparotomy (open abdominal surgery). It wasn't fun but definitely worth it. I don't know which problem was causing which symptoms but I have my old life back, no heavy periods, soaking my sheets every night - no getting up to empty my bladder, no more back pain and menstral cramps are totally gone. Just two months after my surgery. It may not be the best solution for you but it was a life-saver for me. Wish you well, DeAnn

Guest guest
Hi Up until a few weeks ago I did not know a thing about fibroids.... For the last year I have been getting very heavy periods, lots of clots and abdominal pain even when I am not on my monthly cycle Anyway, finally I went to my G.P. who sent me for an ultrasound which showed several small fibroids and one the size of a tennis ball...it also showed an Ovarian Cyst. Today I saw a gynaecologist, who showed no interest in my fibroids but a lot of interest regarding the cyst, I had blood taken a smear another appointment for another scan and to see him in two weeks. He has given me a prescription to lessen the bleed on my monthly cycle but is not going to suggest anything else regarding my fibroids, he seems to think the pain is from the cyst. I know I should have asked more questions regarding the fibroids, but was rather taken aback by his attitude..don't get me wrong he was very professional but left me feeling that the fibroids were of no consequence... By the way, he told me there was no way he would do a hysterectomy unless it was absolutely necessary as I have a bicorneal uterus and two cervix and the risks are higher I am a little confused now as to what to say when I next see him. I would be grateful if anyone out there has any ideas as to what I should ask, maybe more specific in nature? My name is by the way, glad I found this list and I am in the U.K.

Guest guest
Hi to everyone, My situation sounds very similar to 's. I went to my GP with my usual complaints of heavy-long periods. This year I have had increasing problems with stress incontinence of the bladder. During the exam my GP thought that my bladder wasn't dropping but the problem was a large fibroid pressing onto it. Ultrasound showed 9 cm fibroid and 9 cm ovarian cyst. I am also scheduled to go to a Gyn next week. I am waiting to see what they say. My GP said the cyst could twist onto itself and cause emergency surgery. Have you heard that? I do appreciate learning from all your experiences and they have helped me to understand more of what I am facing. Has anyone else had major difficulty with their bladder. My doctor seems to be more focused on the cyst and now my bladder -heavy bleeding doesn't seem to be the concern. I will take all that up with my Gyn. I am in Lititz PA Thanks for the help Lois Goodman wrote: > Hi > Up until a few weeks ago I did not know a thing about fibroids.... Guest guest
Hi Lois & , Cycsts can be problematic and in a worse case scenario can rupture sending you to the emergency room for sudden surgery when it happens. (This happened to my mom when I was growing up. She had a cyst that was 7 lbs. I don't know how large that is. She was overweight at the time so it went undetected.) I don't mean to sound gloomy, its just you do want to have it monitored carefully and treated sooner vs. later. Small cysts are very common and frequently will disappear on their own. I had a cyst removed during my lapara & hysteroscopic exam to check on my fibroids, view my ovaries, and rule out anything serious. Out patient procedure in at 5am & home by 4pm then up and around after 3 days taking it slow. it was sent to the lab and test results showed nothing abnormal. It was on one of my ovaries and I'm sorry to say i can't remember how big it was--big enough the doctor felt it should come out though. I had more discomfort from the hystero biopsies & bleeding due to polyps removed than the removal of the cyst afterwards. The only thing I'm wondering is if they do intend to remove the cyst surgically would they consider treating the fibroids and possibly removing them at the same time. If not, why, do they have other treatment options in mind? Its something to consider if you are going to go under general anesthesia. (i regret not having had a couple of large moles removed while under! I just didn't think of it at the time.) Bladder: I feel like I have to pee every time I turn around! There just isn't enough room down there! All the best, PS Hopefully someone on the list has firsthand experience with a larger cyst and its treatment. > > > Hi > > Up until a few weeks ago I did not know a thing about fibroids.... Guest guest
, I'm glad to see that you have already gotten a reply indicating some of the reasons why your gynaecologist is paying much more attention to your ovarian cyst than to your fibroids. I am writing to let you know that there is a UK fibroids discussion group at Smartgroups. A smaller group, without the wealth of knowledge of the members of this group, but useful for the UK focus. And the database and links sections at the website have some information on consultants and organisations in the UK. The webpage URL is http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/fibroids Also, a fibroids information centre and bookshop will shortly be launched in London.
