Welcome " kerrihousley " ! You have made a wise decision to incorporate

IE into your life. Don't be upset if you initially try to do this in

the same ways you would have tried new diets, that is very common.

However IE is not about weight really, its about eating for reasons

that FUEL your body, not 'feed' your other drives (suppressed emotions

being #1).

I do hope that after you trash your diet stuff, you will get a book or

two to read about IE so that you can learn about it and keep that your

focus whenever diet mentality crashes back upon you. Its a big step,

but it sounds like the right one for you. BEST wishes :) ehugs, Katcha

Thanks for the warm welcome and words of support. I am excited about

my new path, I can't wait to see where it leads. I still have the

tendency to look at food labels for calorie content. Oh well, old

Hi Kerri,

I'm also new to IE. I read the IE book and I'm actually reading

through parts of it again. Like you I'm still falling into the trap

of defining foods as " good " or " bad " . The diet mentality is

definitely hard to shake.

I have noticed that my binging has lessened, and I think the fact

that I'm not making any foods off limits has helped. I used to

binge on a whole bag of Hershey Kisses and then when I was done I'd

think " There, now that those are all gone I won't have them tempting

me " all the while having a horrible stomach ache. How messed up is

that?!! Now I'll tell myself that I can enjoy chocolate, and heck I

can eat the whole bag if I want but somehow knowing that I CAN have

more makes me eat less. I'm hoping this means I'm on the right

track. I would like to lose about 15 pounds to be at a weight where

I feel comfortable and healthy, but I also would like to have a

healthier mental attitude about foods. Everyone in this group is so

helpful, I'm sure we'll both learn a lot!

Patty - I hear you about the Hershey Kisses! Mine was always Peanut M & M's. I am also working with an IE therapist (sorry, Gillian;-), and one of her exercises for me one week was to go to Sam's Club and buy (I kid you not) 6 - 3# bags of Peanut M & M's, pour one in a bowl, leave it on the counter and when it was gone, refill it and go buy another 3# bag. This way, I know I can't eat 18# of M & M's at one go, so I only have them when I really want them, then I just have a few and I'm satisfied. May I share that I haven't even gone through the first bag and have 5 unopened bags sitting in my office? If I had bought the box with the packages of M & M's in it, I would have eaten a pack each day mindlessly and then the whole box would have been gone weeks ago. The theory behind it is that since I'm not deprived of them and they'll never run out, I can let go of the deprivation and diet mentality that they are "Bad" and

they're just there. And they are....just there. My family ate off of them the first few days, but now they sit, gathering dust. It's really quite fascinating. I know it got long, but I'm just so inspired by the whole concept of living my life this way, it just feels right to be developing that internal control. CW, I 'legalized' chocolate following this type of exercise and one

thing I will emphasize is that you really really really need to make

sure you have MORE than you can possibly eat on hand for this to work.

At first I only bought about a pound of chocolate peanuts (bulk

section of grocery store) and was easily able to eat these within a

week's time (I shop once a week). But after I bought 5+ pounds, my

'desire' to eat these dropped. Not only were they 'available', I was

able to let myself experience how it felt to eat so much chocolate -

and its not as wonderful as the taste - lol. I was also able to

discover for myself that chocolate is a FOOD and eating it isn't

'bad', its eating it when I'm not hungry that is something I have to

work with, not the chocolate itself. Its wild when a salad sounds

better than eating chocolate :)

Those are great suggestions for legalizing foods. Isn't it funny how just the fact that you have too much of something in the house makes it less tempting? It's almost like playing mind games with yourself.

CW - don't be sorry, that's silly! :-) I'm excited to hear that you found

an IE therapist. Where are you located? I would love to have a list of IE

therapists so when I have a client that really needs therapy versus

coaching I can refer her to one. I've been very excited to see the growth

of the non-diet movement in the last year or so. I went to a one-day

workshop with Elyse Resch and Tribole last month and there were so

many dieticians and therapists there, it was really good to see. The more

we can get the word out, the sooner we can get rid of the diet industry,

that's one of my goals. I know it's going to happen sometime.

I do the same thing every week, where I stock my cupboard with junk food and limit my healthy food selection. My husband is even getting sick of it! Anyhow, those foods have lost their allure to me, now. I mostly crave cereal, ice berg lettuce and crunchy tomatoes. Yum!

similar thing with (believe it or not) graham crackers years ago and

it did work, BUT my question is what happens when the " experiment " is

over? Do you still keep the candy around? I can tell you that if I

had peanut M & Ms in the house and out in a bowl, I would eat a few

I'm curious. . .I can absolutely understand how this works. I did a

similar thing with (believe it or not) graham crackers years ago and

it did work, BUT my question is what happens when the " experiment " is

Gillian, per your requests for IE therapists, my husband has been

talking with Ellen Shuman at A Weigh Out for several months now, and

has found the experience valuable. She is a life coach working with

food issues. From everything he as told me, she seems to follow the IE

approach (she recommended that he read the Intuitive Eating book). She

does most of her work over the phone, so location isn't an issue. Here

- It isn't an experiment. You learn from doing something like this (with whatever foods you need to do it with) that ALL foods have a place in your life. No one will ever take it away from you, you can have it for the rest of your life whenever you are hungry for it. I asked my therapist a similar question and her response was that if somewhere in the back of my head I still had the idea that at some point I was still going to restrict myself from any foods or "go on a diet again" this process will not work. IE isn't a temporary fix or another "eating program" it is learning to make peace with food, yourself, your body (no matter where it is at the moment) for the rest of your life. As a compulsive, binge eater, I know that it seems impossible that you can really have all these foods that have formerly triggered binges around and "allowed", but part of the work is that you will start to think about WHY

you are reaching for whatever food and figure out what's really behind the urge to binge - on anything. I wish you luck and peace on your journey, CW
