Hey Butterfly, I feel your pain - I not only

pack my lunch every day, too, but I have to

consider how I get TO work everyday - on my

motorcycle! So anything I pack has to fit

into a saddlebag and survive the journey

without spilling! I tried/tested several

different ways to do that and finally

settled on the Lock & Lock containers you

can buy from QVC (there are also a lot of

knock-offs of those available just about

anywhere, including walmart.) I bought

their " Lunch Bag set " which includes an

insulated cooler and several sizes of

containers that are just perfect for

sandwiches or salads and snacks and such.

If it'll survive two motorcycle trips every

day it'll survive anything!

Hope that helps.

Oh, by the way, I also have a real

" economic " issue with throwing food away.

I just keep repeating to myself the phrase

used in the IE book - it will be " waisted "

if you don't " waste " it. I've also tried

to get smarter about buying/preparing

portions that are more sensible so I don't

find myself in a position to throw things

away. It took forever for it to occur to

me that if I pull up to a drive-thru for

something and don't want to have to throw

half of it away, just order the child's

size, dummy! Geeze, I can be thick some

times! :D

I grew up poor, too, and I also hate throwing away food. I agree that

it's terribly wasteful. I can usually eyeball how much I'm hungry for.

Also, I would recommend serving yourself smaller portions - you can

always go back for seconds. Try making smaller cookies, mini ice cream

sandwiches, fun size candy bars, etc; rather than having the portions

that are too big to eat.

Also, since you don't have a refrigerator at work, don't take a lot of

food that needs to be refrigerated. Take a portion you are very likely

to finish, and bring something else that doesn't need to be

refrigerated, in case you get hungry - crackers, fruit, juice boxes,

peanut butter, cookies, granola bars, etc.

Just my two cents.

I have a refrig at work that's several

floors away, too, but I just try not to

ever bring something that my insulated

lunch bag/cooler can't keep cold with

a reusable ice pack in it. There's

tuna in there waiting for me today and

one of those big blue reusable ice

thingees keeps it plenty cold until

lunch.

The first thing that comes to my mind is to pre-package your lunch

into several, smaller containers. I have bought 4 small plastic

containers with lids for about $1. If you divide the food into smaller

proportions, you can eat one at a time until you are satisfied and

then have the 'remaining' food already packed to take home or for

eating at your afternoon break?

Oh, I can relate to that, too. I'm more inclined to take a smaller

portion of something rather than a larger portion and waste it (unless

it's something I really find disgusting). I've practiced finding a

balance between the " Clean Plate Club " mentality and eating only until

my body is happily satisfied and dumping the rest.

I have a friend at work who is " naturally thin " in terms of her eating

habits, and in my opinion, she wastes an ENORMOUS amount of food! I

just can't agree with it.

We had gourmet sandwiches for lunch today and sat outside in the sun

to enjoy them; she got a whole one, ate half, then threw away the

other half (we have refrigerators all over the place at work; I work

for a huge corporation).

I bought a half sandwich to begin with, ate half of THAT, saved it,

then later, when I wanted a snack, it sounded appetizing so I finished it.

I'm not a food waster.

I wouldn't stuff myself to finish something, and have been known to

wrap & save a couple bites' worth of something--but sometimes, a

couple bites' worth is all I need at a later time! :-)

Caitlin,

I agree with you on not wasting food! I keep the other half and peel it into two meals as well - or its tomorrow's lunch!

Amazing how far food can last you!
