Guest guest
My husband is scheduled for surgery on August 26th. Assuming everything goes well, how long should he expect to be in the hospital? How much care will he need when he gets out? I'm trying to figure out my work schedule so that I am available to him as much as he'll need me. Much thanks! Guest guest
Michele, That is likely to depend on which type of surgery he has chosen. Robotic, laproscopic and traditional have different recovery times is my understanding. Also to be considered is his basic health and well being before surgery. Perhaps if you post these things others who have been through this will respond with their experiences. Even though they may not be the same as your husband they might be useful in considering your plans. May the future treat you kindly,JeffSubject: SurgeryTo: ProstateCancerSupport Date: Saturday, July 26, 2008, 9:36 PM My husband is scheduled for surgery on August 26th. Guest guest
Hi Michele: I haven't read the other responses to you so I may be repeating things others already told you. My husband had DaVinci in Feb. He had surgery on a Friday and came home around noon on Sunday. I took off on Thurs and of course Friday. Thursday was prep day and we just wanted to spend the day together. We had to be at hospital by 6 am on Friday. I took the next whole week off; but he would have been okay by Wednesday; but I just wanted to be with him. I would have worried at work and my boss said take the whole week--you need to be with him. If your insurance will cover it; have a visiting nurse come in. Ours was wonderful and she helped him with kegels, etc. It gave me peace of mind to have someone keeping a check on him, etc. She was so caring and nurturing. Another idea--have someone who is a comfort and calming person to be with you while you DH is in surgery. I had a close friend of mine since I was 12 and he was 16. We are like brother and sister and it was great. We had a nice long chat about lots of stuff we haven't had time for in a long while. I wish you and your husband well. You will make it through this. I never thought I'd start feeling like myself again--but I am feeling a lot better now. We are almost 6 months from surgery. We have gained a lot and our relationship has been enriched. It's been tough; but lots of good has come out of it. Take care and take deep breaths. debbiew. Guest guest
Dear Steve S: You have sure had your share, haven't you? You and your dear wife should get some kind of medal!! I am amazed at what you have been through. Hope all goes well with your PCa surgery. You and Michele's husband will be in my prayers!! Take care. debbiew Subject: Re: Surgery To: ProstateCancerSupport Date: Sunday, July 27, 2008, 2:30 AM Michele, I am no doctor and I am scheduled for robotic (DaVinci) RP on August 6. It all depends on whether it is the open or DaVinci. Average stay according to my doctor is 2 days with DaVinci to 6 or 7 days with the open. I cannot stand another long hospital stay and my wife is going to be there as she has been during my previous 7 different surgeries (gallbladder, 3 knee, 3 back).. Fortunately, her schedule is fairly flexible. Best of luck. I will post back after I get home from my surgery and hospital stay. Guest guest
Thanks Debbie. I told the doctor doing the surgery that I knew it was going to be alright. I have the Great Physician on my side. He, the doctor, is only being used as God's instrument. I look at this as another test of my faith. I have used everything that has happened as a character building mechanism. Dad had Alzheimer's. I became an advocate and taught classes and ran a support group for AD families. I will use this to become an advocate for cancer treatments and will contact as many as I can to try to get a proton machine put into the new cancer wing being built at UAMS in Little Rock. Give me some lemons so I can make some lemonade! It always helps to have people, praying for you. My neurosurgeon asked me how I recovered so quickly after my surgery in December. He also said that there was no way I should have been walking before or after with as many problems as I had and have in my back. Told him the same thing I tell everyone - God is in control. I will enjoy whatever time I stay in the hospital and use it to help others. I now have a new insight into all types of cancers and treatments. Guess that is the pastor in me to look for the bright side. I do have to admit to a touch of anxiety. Want to enjoy another 37 years with my wife (July 30 makes 37!).Have a great day!
