Marvin, I have kept silent long enough. you are correct in saying noone

failed and this was not a test. patience is a virtue . my nurse came

yesterday for her weekly visit and I had the report from the doctor saying I

was to take the lantus eight. because he would not listen to me. she

prefilled my weekly supply of needles of the lantus reluctantly with the

seven units in each needle as I requested. but she called the doctor and

told them she could not find the paper work. she did not like to follow the

order with out it. I cant believe I had to lie to her with the paper work in

my housecoat pocket at this very moment to change it to lantus seven at

night. but like a kid, a blind kid. I had to resort to this to get my way. I

told her I wanted lantus seven and I do my humalog four times a day and make

the changes as I see them so what is the difference. . she said she was

waiting for the busy doctor to call her back during the day yesterday. well

I was counting on her forgetfulness. she was having a bad day yesterday and

I was only her second patient and she was frustrated. I will likely catch

hell after I am found out. but I cant believe I had to go to such drastic

methods to get the lantus reduced by one stinking unit each naught. I trust

the shit will hit the fan when I am found out.

I hope what you are saying is not true. If it is, it is another good reason

to fear and fight against socialized medicine, where all the power of

diagnosis and treatment is invested in the state and its medical personnel,

and the patient has no say in their care. If what you say is true, then I

can understand why patients fear to speak for themselves in fear of reprisal

from the state and its officials. Also if this is true, I understand why a

doctor does not care for a drug representative to visit him to inform him

about new drugs on the market. He does not wish to be bothered by them,

because he does not control the purchase and dispersal and distribution of

medication. All medicines are controlled by the state, and if a particular

drug is not on the state's formulary, then it is never prescribed. So what

would be the use of learning something from a drug representative who wishes

to sell the latest dosage system by Lantus?

, I am stunned that your medical people are so controlling. Don't they

believe you are your own person who knows your body better than they do? I

am wondering whuy you don't get a count-a-dose so you can measure your

insulin independently? They are available from Maxi Aidsand are worth every

penny even if you have to pay for it yourself.

, I am stunned that your medical people are so controlling. Don't they

believe you are your own person who knows your body better than they do? I

am wondering whuy you don't get a count-a-dose so you can measure your

insulin independently? They are available from Maxi Aidsand are worth every

penny even if you have to pay for it yourself.

Re: I failed

The count-a-dose dosing system is sold by a private business called Maxy

aides. If the government of Canada does not stock this device in their

medical supplies, then the doctor is powerless to give it to you. However

you can purchase it on your own with your own money.

Harry, the supplier of lantis is not one of the doctors regular suppliers. I

gave him the companies phone number and I know I have called them many times

and you do get a run around. I have been trying to get lantus for a long

time now. and I thank god I finally have it. nothing move quickly here and

that is truth. if I could administer the lantus myself I would have

control. why the heck would a manufacturer not make it in pen forum? all the

insulin's come this way. it drives me crazy but it is something we have to

deal with. I will try calling the supplier again today. but in the past they

will not be doing anything for me because you have to be a doctor. so I will

just complain. but I am just one person. I do not know what else I can do?

Lantus does come in pen form. If the pen form of Lantus is not on Canada's

formulary, then the doctor cannot prescribe it. So the best solution for

dosing Lantus would be for you to have your very own count-a-dose system,

which costs around $50-60 USA. Then you could draw your own dose of Lantus

from the vile.

Hi ,

I'm in Canada as well and am trying to obtain a Count-a-Dose so that I can

measure my own Lantus. I've talked to both my doctor and pharmacy and

neither of them knew what I was talking about. The pharmacy says if I can

find the company which manufactures it they may be able to order it for me,

so that may work for you as well if you can find a pharmacy and the

manufacturer for the Count-a-Dose. So far all I've been able to find are

destributers, not manufacturers. I may just give in and order it online,

although the cost would likely be much higher.

Lantus just got approved in Canada a few months ago, which may be why it

took so long for you to get it. I know people who have used it for over a

year here but they got it from the U.S. before it was approved here. My

doctor told me of it months before it was approved and available and

switched me to it as soon as it was approved, because of the benefits of

Lantus over NPH. Also, there is now Lantus available in pens in the U.S. so

here's hoping it will come to Canada soon.

Good luck getting the Count-a-Dose and taking control! Right now I get my

mom to measure my Lantus for me and she will dose whatever I ask her to.

Except for the first month or so after I was diagnosed the dosing of insulin

has always been our (first my mom's, then my) responsibility. Is it possible

for you to get someone else rather than a nurse to measure your Lantus? I

can't imagine having to lie just to get it lowered by one unit, that should

be your decision not a doctor's. When I go to my doctor the first question

he asks before even looking at my readings is whether my rapid- and

long-acting doses have changed because he knows that diabetes is primarily a

patient-managed disease, not a doctor-managed one. He might make some

changes or suggestion but he also knows that by the next visit I may have

changed them again.

Good luck!

Right.

You can also purchase the Count-a-Dose from the National Federation of

the Blind's (NFB's) Aids and Appliances store. Go to

http://www.nfb.org

and select " Aids and Appliances " from the first combo box and hit the

" go " button.

You can use the Count-a-Dose to measure your lantis. However, this is

not necessary. Dunno about Canada but lantis *does* come in a pen in the

U.S.A. It's new -- like in the last three months. Also, I know that

someone Down Under (Australia) is using a lantis pen.

jen, I took my log book that the nurse records the readings. and since I do

so many more readings I log them on the computer and took a print out of it

as well. he took two calls about other patients while he was talking to me

during my scheduled visit and I think he was a little flustered. maybe

having a bad day. I never thought of calling the blind association about it.

I had called several pharmacies who now stock it. even got them to call the

doctor to tell him it was in. it was approved in Canada well over two years

ago. it was even written up in the nurses medial book before it was on the

market.
