Here's some science from the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute,

published on Pub Med:

Basch E, et al., " Flax and flaxseed oil (Linum usitatissimum): a review

by the Natural Standard Research Collaboration. "

It concludes: " Most of the available evidence investigates the efficacy

of alpha-linoleic acid found in flaxseed compared with fish oil, and

almost all of the available studies are poor quality. Although flaxseed

and flaxseed oil have several promising future uses, the available

literature does not support recommendation for any condition at this time. "

Flaxseed: Does it increase my prostate cancer risk?

Q.

I take flaxseed to control my high cholesterol. But I was recently told that flaxseed increases the risk of prostate cancer. Is this true?

A.

There is limited research on the effects of flaxseed on the risk of prostate cancer. Flaxseed and flaxseed oil are rich sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) — a fatty acid — which can help reduce total cholesterol.

Some research suggests that higher levels of ALA may be associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer. Other preliminary studies report that a low-fat diet supplemented with flaxseed can reduce prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in men with enlarged prostate glands (benign prostatic hyperplasia) and in those with prostate cancer. However, these effects may be due to a reduction in dietary fats. The role of flaxseed in such cases isn't clear.

Overall, it remains unclear whether flaxseed or flaxseed oil has a role in the prevention or treatment of prostate cancer. Until more definitive studies are available, it's probably best for men to avoid supplementation with high doses of flaxseed.

Hi All,

I hope and pray all are doing as well as can be expected. We are all in different stages in this war against prostate cancer. But I believe that we all know how each other feels. My question is to anyone have any info on flaxseed or flaxseed oil and radiation treatments, mainly IMRT. I was just wondering if I should add this to my husband's diet.

Have a good day, all!

Best Wishes,

Sheila

I realize that this is purely anecdotal but just prior to my husband's PSA rise in 2006, our opthalmologist had suggested that he take flaxseed oil capsules for his complaint of "dry eyes". As I said, I don't know if there was a connection but about six months later, his PSA began to rise.

At our next opthalmologist visit, we mentioned the by then diagnosed prostate cancer and she said that the link between flaxseed oil and prostate cancer had only recently been mentioned in the literature. This was in December 2007. We didn't confont her any further on the subject.

Carol,

Thank you for your response. I think what I read was true. How is your husband doing now? What type of treatment did he have if you don't mind me asking?

Best Wishes,

Sheila

Sheila,

My husband is doing well so far. Thanks for asking.

He had proton treatment at Loma in April and May 2007. So far,

his PSA has gone down from a high of 3.5 to 0.8, as of March 2008.

There have been no major side effects except urinary urgency during

the treatment which disappeared about a month after the treatment

ended.

Hope your husband is doing well too.

Carol
