The triple screen is just a combination of three blood tests - AFP (alpha fetoprotein), B-HCG, and estriol - not an invasive procedure. It is sensitive, not specific, which is why it is used for screening only. There will be MANY false positives. I read one study that said only 20 of 760 " positive " triple screens were confirmed as Down's by amniocentesis (3%). The amnio, on the other hand, is an invasive procedure, as is CVS. You may want to ask about fetal chromosome analsis on cells circulating in your bloodstream. Ask your doctor's office to check with their reference lab to see if this is an option. I don't have any direct experience with this, but recall reading an article about it. Darlene
Guest guest
Sue, The triple maternal screen is simply a blood test. It does have lots of false positives though. You might want to ask your OB about it. If you have it done and it is negative then that would be great! We are here for you!
