If you are not comfortable or don't have time to bring anything, then

you could just make the best of it and fill up on the least offensive

items. There is likely to be a meat entree - ham or turkey usually.

If ham, cut away the edges in case it is glazed, and eat as much of

this as you can. Then she's bound to have a veggie or two. If they

are all casseroles, get the least carby and try to inconspicuously

pick out the worst, like if it is a bean, bacon, onion crispy thing,

then pick out the crispies. Drink all the water you can hold and

then some more. Eat a big meal before you leave home and a snack in

the car. Fix yourself a legal treat when you get home and get back

on the wagon. And you can probably get away w/ bringing a big can of

nuts to put out so you will have something to snack on.

Just try to relax and enjoy yourself the best you can and get back w/

the program as soon as you leave. Most of all, don't use the

opportunity to give up and pig out on pie and rolls and mashed

potatoes LOL!

K,

I know you aren't asking for suggestions, but here's one anyway... LOL Would you be able to eat a big breakfast before you go, or on your way there, so that you just won't be hungry for lunch? Then who's going to measure what you put on your plate or punish you for not cleaning your plate? Right?

Just an unsolicited suggestion...

Oh K, I really don't know what best to say,

I can only think for you to bring something in the dessert lines i.e..

cheesecake made with splenda and a nut base, as I take these because I can

NEVER say no to desserts ((blush)) and they don't look deity i.e. no

questions are asked and also people love additional dessert choices so it

looks like your just being thoughtful rather than being 'deity'.

Usually main sources will have some salad or veggies and some form of meat

put as much legal things on your plate as possible with other things you

don't intend to eat if need be and leave the carb stuff after pushing it

around your plate a bit and saying how wonderful it al was but you are full.

I have done this with spag. bol and it worked without anyone being the

wiser.

Hope it helps a little,

KimP

Kathy M...I love your idea about saying my Dr. put me on this diet. I did

think I might be borderline diabetic too! As for the dinner menu, this is

what my sil wrote:

.. I am planning ham, cheesy hash browns, and maybe peas with little

onions (Bill likes them and doesn't get them much because the rest of us don't

really care for them.) Mom is bringing rolls. I am having either cherry or

pecan

pie (which would you like more?) or ice cream with Christmas cookies. "

As you can see Pam doesn't really have a lot here. That's why I thought I'd

make a fancy SF jello salad with cream cheese and cream. And I would love to

make the faux potatoes if I have time. I'm worried I might be in the way in

the kitchen to reheat, etc. Guess I should worry...they are family! Would

love to make a cheesecake too. I don't cook fancy much and would hate to

goof a good recipe! I'll try to make time and just do it.

Thanks for the imput!!!

glad you gave me a suggestion! Chicken salad might just do the trick!

I do make a mean one too at that. That could be served as a salad if anyone

else wants some too. Thanks!

Beth...good suggestions. I never thought of cutting away the edges of the

ham, which is what we're having. And water...that's good, I can drink that

and " look busy " . When we had my dh folks here, I ate very very slowly and

nobody noticed I didn't eat potatoes, etc. I thought about bringing a can of

cashews. Thanks.

You can certainly have the ham and not worry too much about it. Even if it

is sugar cured, don't fret too much about it. Why not just surprise them

with an additional vegetable dish that you'll bring? You could take a

mashed cauliflower casserole and everyone would probably love it . . . or

some green beans or cooked cabbage or broccoli.

Even if you at the peas with pearl onions, just take a small portion and

count those toward your carbs for the day. 1/2 cup of canned green peas has

only about 12 grams of carbs. That isn't so bad for a rare, special

occasion.

Just forego the desserts, or take one that you know you can have, like a

sugar free cheesecake. They'd probably also like that. Or also, you could

take a bag of salad and some dressing and tell them you've just been craving

salad lately!

You'll do fine, and the menu doesn't look all that bad, except for the

potatoes, rolls and dessert!

You could offer to make the cheesecake. There are many really good sugar-free recipes. Just say the word and several will be posted. My favorite is below.

Pam

Best Low Carb Cheesecake In the World!

5 packages (8 oz ) cream cheese5 large eggs18 packets Splenda or 3/4 cup granulated1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract1/2 cup heavy cream

This must be baked right. If it is it is so excellent that you will betempted to eat more than one piece. It also must be cooked thoroughly or thetexture will not be right.

Make sure that cream cheese and eggs are at room temperature. (veryimportant).Preheat oven to 350.Spray a springform pan with a non-stick spray.

In a large bowl mix eggs, cream, sweetener, and extract. Add cream cheese in2 oz chunks for easier beating. After all the lumps are gone pour into thepan and bake for 50 to 55 minutes. (mine took 60). Cool all the way. Ileft in fridge overnight.

9 carbs per piece. (12 pieces per pie)

TruDee....good idea. We were leaving in the morning but now it looks like

we'll arrive about 2 hours before dinner. I could use lunch for an excuse.

I've made a list of foods to take like celery with cream cheese, tuna,

deviled eggs, hard boiled eggs, cooked bacon, etc.

Kim,

I like your suggestion too...will take a cheesecake that someone posted for

me. I don't really eat desserts (never have) but it'll be something others

can eat.

Kathy.M..sounds so cute! I think the Christmas tree could just have white

" clouds " , don't you? No need to color the cauliflower then!

K in MI

since 11/9/00As a matter of fact here is a really cute " recipe " to take:

Put some sort of white dip in a pan/dish (9X 13 or what ever size meets the

need... I use a BIG sheet cake pan) Use broccoli florrets to shape a

christmas tree, with cerely " chunks " to make the trunk. Use very small grape

tomatos for the tree decorations. Dip cauliflower in different colors of

food coloring to make presents for under the tree, and fill in the sky part

with blue cauliflower. It really is very easy. The hardest part is coloring

the cauliflower!
