Guest guest
I agree with Eileen. I have a 12-step background and prefer to participate in discussion that's focused on the main mission of the group. For me, talking about specific objects of allegiance such as EFT and specific religions -- no matter what religion -- divides people instead of bringing them together. At least I feel it as a divisive effect when someone talks about a religion that I do not follow or an approach (such as EFT, low-carb, etc.) that I haven't seen as helpful. When this type of thing is discussed, there will always be someone who is selected out. If we talked about, say, meditation (beyond a mention of the subject), I would be able to identify, but someone else would not, and they would be selected out. I like this group so far, but thought I should be honest and add my perspective. Like Eileen, I need a support group for this type of non-diet approach to eating. This is the only one I found on Yahoo that looked like it was fairly active. Thanks! Sue Portland, Maine, US Original Message: ----------------- From: Eileen Gannon ecg31486@... I'm grateful for the IE approach, because I believe it is literally saving my life. In 12-step programs, they have a tradition of not discussing outside issues in meetings, but rather sticking to the topic at hand and talking about the particular issue after the meeting. Mabe we could try that? If you have something you want to talk about that doesn't relate to the IE process, even though it may compliment IE, maybe offline discussions might be a better way to handle it. I've found myself wondering if this is an EFT group or an IE group. Personally, I've researched EFT, while it looks and sounds like it could complement IE, it definitely has a new-age feel to it, for those who like that approach. On his website he says he uses " A Course in Miracles " by nne on, a noted New Age author. Personally, I am not comfortable with that approach. I prefer an approach that is secular and can be used by anyone of any faith or no faith, which is what IE is. Craig, founder of EFT, is an ordained minister, but his church is what would be considered a " new-age " church, not someone in the traditional Christian faith tradition. Even if he were an ordained Christian minister, or Muslim imam, or Jewish rabbi, I'm not so sure endorsement of his product is appropriate in this group. In fact, all the stuff going around about EFT and other ways to lose weight has made me uncomfortable and I'm considering dropping out of the group. After researching all the books/methods that have been mentioned in this posting, it seems they all rither endorse a diet in some form, or are affiliated with a particular religious tradition (new age, christian, etc.), or just say that you can " pull yourself up by your bootstraps by doing X, Y and Z. Those approaches have never worked for me. And after struggling with my weight for 20 years, I need the IE approach. In my view, these approaches are outside issues and probably should be discussed offline. I have no objection to a religious approach, as I am a woman of faith. However, I think that I would correspond offline with someone to discuss that particular approach and how I can incorporate it into the IE approach. I'm not saying don't ever mention another approach, but just briefly comment on it and ask people to correspond offline with you if they have further questions. I really need this group, because it helps me remember to focus on the IE approach. I've tried South Beach, Atkins, OA, etc. etc. And nothing has worked. For me, IE is a last resort in trying to recover from my food struggles, as well as the issues that are behind the food. In some ways, IE is harder because it forces me to begin to trust myself and my choices, and not to rely on 1 cup of this and 3 oz. of that and 1 tblsp. of the next, all of which, to me, are the diet mentality, and never really get to the core of my issues with overeating. My intention on posting this is just to give feedback how I feel as a newbie to the IE approach and posts I've seen recently. I'd really like to stick to the IE approach because nothing - NOTHING - else has worked consistently over the past 20 years. I've always gained back the weight, and IE really is my last-ditch effort. I really believe my life is at stake - physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I don't want to die from complications of being 100 lbs. overweight. And I am open to hearng about another approach, but I don't want it promoted ad nauseum in these posts. Just mention it briefly in your post and ask people to reply only to you if I'm interested. Thanks for listening. Guest guest
I don't know anything about EFT, so I can't speak about that specifically. But I wanted to post that I don't think it's a good idea to get too focused about being 100% on topic when it comes to IE. I have been doing this since last July, and I am fairly certain I wouldn't have made anywhere near as much progess as I had if I only focused on IE. I have gotten most of my support through a different online group, and we discuss all aspects of conscious eating and conscious living. Without the conscious living part, I think there is a good chance that I would be on another diet right now. I can't speak for everyone, but it has been really vital for me to take a whole life perspective on this issue. My issues go so much deeper than food. While I believe that intuitive eating is an extremely important part of the puzzle, it's not the whole puzzle. Two authors that have really helped me on this journey are Eckhart Tolle and Pema Chodron. Neither of them say anything about intuitive eating, but their insight has helped me tremendously with intuitive eating. And I wouldn't have learned about them without my online group. I am just urging you to keep an open mind about posts that may seem off topic. You might just find that you read something in one of those posts that will really help you with IE.
