YRG CARE Fellowship in HIV Medicine

A Professional ¡§Hands on¡¨ HIV Disease Management Training for

Physicians

BACKGROUND:

Y R Gaitonde Center for AIDS Research and Education (YRG CARE),

Chennai in partnership with The Fenway Institute of Fenway Community

Health, Boston, USA invites applications from interested physicians

in Southern India for a fellowship program in HIV medicine organized

with support from The Pfizer Foundation. The program will be

conducted at YRG CARE, which offers medical and psychosocial care for

over 10,000 persons living with HIV.

OBJECTIVES:

The broad objective of this training program is Continuing Medical

Education (CME) and formal training, which is essential to stay up-to-

date on clinical management of HIV disease. The fellowship also

includes an ongoing, online strengthening of the technical and

research capabilities of the fellows as the management of HIV disease

is changing at a rapid pace.

TRAINING METHOD:

o Every day clinical rotations with hands on training.

o Every day rotations that offer the trainee requisite experience in

diagnosis and counseling issues.

o Regular technical sessions, which include lectures, case

discussions and research methodology.

CURRICULUM:

The curriculum comprehensively includes the following topics:

o Epidemiology of HIV.

o Basic science of HIV.

o Natural history and pathogenesis of HIV.

o Laboratory diagnosis of HIV.

o Opportunistic Infections (OI¡¦s).

o Anti-retroviral Therapy (ART).

o Prevention of Parent to Child HIV Transmission (PPTCT).

o Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP).

o Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and its lab diagnosis.

DURATION:

Onsite Training:

3 months hands on training at the YRG CARE facilities in Chennai and

Nellore.

Thesis Submission:

Additional 3 months will be allowed after completion of the hands on

training to submit their thesis.

FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM SCHEDULE:

Batch 1: January ¡V March 2007

Batch 2: May ¡V July 2007

No. of Participants Per Batch: 9

SPECIAL FEATURES:

o Access to the state-of-the art US-NIH funded clinical and research

laboratory to learn methodologies used for HIV related diagnosis.

o Learning opportunity in various HIV related counseling

(psychosocial, family, nutritional, treatment literacy, etc).

o Mentoring by local and international faculty/specialists.

o Participation in CME meetings and in-house clinical research

meetings.

o Education on research methodology and thesis submission by three

months after the onsite training.

o Online mentoring support:

„X Enables fellows to stay in touch after the fellowship training.

„X Learning portal for delivering online education on current HIV

management issues.

ELIGIBILITY:

o MBBS or Post-graduate degree in Medicine.

o Fluency in English.

o A lasting commitment to HIV/AIDS disease management.

o Presently residing in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka,

Kerala, Pondicherry or Maharashtra.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:

30 short-listed candidates will be invited for a 3-day orientation

workshop followed by personal interview and preceptor assessments. 9

candidates with top scores will be offered this fellowship.

SCHOLARSHIP:

o Travel, lodging and living expenses scholarship will be awarded to

the short-listed candidates during the 3days orientation workshop.

o A comprehensive scholarship of Rs. 60,000 will be awarded to the

candidate fellows to cover lodge, board and living expenses during

the fellowship program.
