Some 80% of Kellogg cereals will have at least 3 grams of fiber per serving by the end of 2010. That may sound small, but foods with 3 grams are rated a good source of fiber by the government. Guest guest
As I blogged a little about the article - it's still Sugar-Sweetened Processed food. I would rather see parents teaching/leading by example and chosing real food sources of fiber. I still can't recommend Froot Loops except in extreme cases of behavioral issues where bright sweet colors are required just to get a child to eat anything (I had a case like that once). This was one of the few sources of grains that were acceptable. Guest guest
There are two ways of looking at this move by Kellogg's. On the one side: It shows that a food manufacturer is willing to listen to what people want in their food products. So, if we can keep the cry for more nutrition in food products, food manufacturers will eventually listen. On the other side: Food manufacturers will add an ingredient to a food so they can splash across the packaging that the particular food now contains a particular nutrient. It may be that there isn't enough of that nutrient to make a huge impact on overall nutrition, but it becomes a marketing ploy. The same thing goes for using stevia in products. It is a " natural " sweetener so that a product can advertise it contains all " natural " ingredients. But does this make it a " healthy " product? I think we're seeing a little bit of both sides. Guest guest
Interesting string on ADA's allowing an ad for Truvia. Madalyn, you sound like Truvia is a bad thing and that ADA shouldn't be showing its support by allowing Truvia to advertise in the journal. What are your feelings about stevia? It is a natural sweetener that finally got FDA approval. It's a sweetener that has been used since pre-Columbian times. Isn't that enough proof that it is safe? Or are you afraid of side effects from stevia? Is advertising Truvia any different than advertising yogurt with probiotics? Money is to be made in either case. And maybe that's what this all comes down to. Should ADA be allowing companies to advertise in the journal because by allowing it, it shows ADA supports the product? Should we as an organization be backed by food companies, which can be seen by people as statements from ADA being biased or influenced by those companies? It's a similar ethical question of being in a position to both recommend something and also sell it. Regards, a a Schwartz Wennik, M.S., R.D. Guest guest
The problem is ADA isn't going to stop accepting backing from food companies, if for no other reason than the organization's survival. Do you think that ADA has become a " bureaucracy " ? My husband once told me a definition of bureaucracy he saw in his work. When the purpose of an organization becomes self-survival rather than its original mission, it has become a bureaucracy. However, there is a fine line between survival and funding to get your message out. Where is ADA on this continuum? Regards, a a Schwartz Wennik, M.S., R.D.
