Detoxification diets, herb based therapies, and specialty products aimed

at

'recharging' the liver and cleaning the gastrointestinal system (GI) have

captured the attention of today's consumer, becoming a multi-million

dollar

business. Promised benefits include 'toxin shedding', weight loss,

enhanced GI functioning, purified organs, increased energy and wellness,

parasite

removal, and a host of other positive outcomes; however, rarely are the

dangers, problems, or contraindications for vulnerable populations

mentioned.

Accordingly, the purpose of this webinar is to familiarize registered

dietitians with the spectrum of available detoxification therapies, and

review

scientifically validated information regarding the mechanisms of action,

associated risks, reported adverse outcomes, and reviews of efficacy of

these

therapies.

Objectives

* List the various categories of detoxification therapies available

to the US consumer.

* Differentiate between scientifically accepted versus non-validated

mechanisms of action, screening techniques and reported benefits for

select

detox therapies.

* Identify our current state of knowledge and resources regarding

associated risks, reports of adverse outcomes and reviews of efficacy.

* Recall physiologic functions of the GI system and liver, as

pertinent to detoxification therapies.
