Guest guest
Jamy and those on iron: What was your ferritin level. My doctor wants my ferritin to about 70. The last two test are : Aug 56 and Oct 46. Go figure, I was supplementing iron and it dropped. I am in menopause so it is not do to monthly cycles. I think some irons are better absorbed than others. I don't do liver, but should. I think Black strap molasses is good also. Frannie Re: Re: raising meds when it is cold Jamy, when do you take the iron in relation to your meds? I've been taking mine about an hour before bed time... that way it has the run of my system during the night.... it's doing well for me.... ... I'll explain what I base that on... All my life I've had to watch to make sure that I get enough Iron.. for me, when I'm in need of it I crave Brussels sprouts and beef liver.... This is the second time that I've gotten beef liver and cooked it up and comfortably divided it up into several mini-meals. In the past... I'd sit down and eat all the liver in one batch.... just wolfed the stuff down.... When I got some in November, I was still in wolf mode.... but when I got it in December I stretched it into 13 meals (2 pounds of it) and the batch that I got this week was just a bit less than a pound and I got 4 meals out of it... No NEED to wolf it all in one fell swoop.... So my body is doing much better. I'm doing (rats, don't have the numbers in front of me.... ) 100% of the RDA in my multi-vitamins, those are divided up into 8 pieces, one taken with each mini-meal during the day and one an hour before bed time when I take a half tab of a tablet that is 365% of RDA.... My thyroid meds are still doing okay... My thyroid is non functional (killed by RAI) and when I went up the 3 grain last month I went hyper.. so the iron is not binding the thyroid doing it this way.... ... my hyper state is over BTW... I'm feeling great again. Normal appetite... back to convincing myself to not skip any of my mini-meals so that I don't lower my metabolic rate as I continue to lose weight! Big Grin! Guest guest
My first tests were without the ferritin, but showed I had a VERY low folic acid level and some kind of inborn error on that. My b-12 was slightly low. I was getting folic acid and b-12 shots first. Then taking some iron about 100 mg a day. My ferritin was 20. I am on 325 mg 3x a day now. I am seeing a guy that is an endo research guy named Ted Friedman in LA. He has a website that talks about the ferritin issue. Go to goodhormonehealth.com I don't do liver either and eat a lot of rare meat. Didn't help. I am taking ferrous sulfate. You need your b-12 and folic acid tested. Guest guest
Jamy, I also go to Dr. Friedman. He has checked my folic acid and B-12. Guess they are OK he did not say anything. So are you on straight Armour? Wondering why he cut my Armour and gave Levoxyl. I am on 60grain Armour and 50mcg Levoxyl. Would this be equivelent to 2 grains of straight Armour? My Free t3 was 3.8 (2.3-4.2) August. October it was 4.3. This was after the first med change, since he has made another one. I am due for a blood test now. He said, my thyroid is dead also. RAI. Guest guest
He is giving the Armour so you will feel OK I think with all the benefits you get, but adding just some t4. I am hoping you are saying 60 mcg Armour not grains. You would be exploding I think. I am bad at this, but I think that is 1 grain. 15 mcg x 4 is one grain. Your free t3 is a little high. What was your free t4 and TSH? Did you take your med before the blood test, because you shouldn't. You may want to ask him about the ferritin. I would do Floradix liquid iron 2 x a day and ferrous sulfate 325 mg 1x a day. Re: Re: raising meds when it is cold Jamy, when do you take the iron in relation to your meds? Guest guest
Jamy, Oops, typo.. it is 30mcg 2xdaily. Free T4 1.4 Aug and 1.7 in Oct. TSH=.84 Dr. Freidman says to ignore it...my pituitary tumor makes it inaccurate. Are you doing .15mcg Armour 4 x daily? I feel so hypo...wish I knew why?? I think the first test was evening, thyroid AM then, the second was probably after my thyroid dose. Thanks for the iron information. I will check out the website. Big Grin! Guest guest
Just thought I'd clear up the mcg / mg confusion. Armour Thryoid is dosed by grains or mgs. 60 mgs is one grain. Guest guest
Jamy, What have you noticed from the Florinef? Did you have low aldolsterone? Was your bladder overactive and has the Florinef changed that or any symptoms that you know of? Guest guest
Pattie Sue, So what would the 50mcg of Levoxyl be if it were Armour? Would it be near 1 grain of Armour? Guest guest
When It comes to synthetic thyroid I am not an expert (I've never been on them, thankfully) but here is a link that shows a person how to convert their synthroid over to Armour. It may give equivalents I am not sure..http://www.drumlib.com/dp/000016.htm Maybe you can make something of this and it will help you to understand the dosing of levoxyl better. Guest guest
Well back in June a DR I went to see found my aldosterone VERY low through a urine test. he ignored it. When I went to Friedman, he made me go two days no salt and did blood. It and the renin were VERY low. Yesterday was day 1 of a full pill a day. I noticed no difference till yesterday except I have had a funny smell to my urine for a few years and that was gone. Yesterday I went to the bathroom so much that I think my electrolytes are off. My legs were cramping in the middle of the night and I awake with a headache I can't get rid of. Aside from the stuff I have mentioned, I feel no different. It is supposed to help my low blood pressure. I have noticed nothing there, but then I don't take it. He upped my Armour 15 mg when I was there and I just raised it 2 weeks later another 15. I am waiting for 2 midnight saliva tests to come back. My am cortisol after driving 2 hours and being angry at 9:30, was 9, pretty low. I was dxed with hyoreneinism and hypoaldosterone. I have had many people say he does that a lot, but I knew there was an issue with that before, so that is why I went to him. As far as they Armour, he was going to add some t4 to me, but my t3 was so low, he raised the Armour. I also made it quite clear that I have heard some good results on people mixing the t4 with the Armour when they have an issue with high t3 not t4, but I would let him know what I wanted after the tests. He right away said my t3 was too low, so like I said upped me. I have brown patches of hyperpigmentation on my gums and abdomen striations too.
