Guest guest
Well, it's always been refrigerated at other stores but I didn't know it was not shipped refrigerated. That could be the case with all brands. Nor can we know how well it was handled after it left the factory. No way for us to test the viability of the bacteria. Sent: Tuesday, April 21, 2009 8:03 PM To: nedpg Cc: rd-usa Subject: probiotics/fyi The topic of probiotics has been discussed before. I just wanted to share some info about how the supplements are shipped and stored. According to label information on many of the brands, the probiotics should be refrigerated to remain viable. A few weeks ago, I ordered Primadophilus Optima (that's the one I use) from a Vitamin Shoppe store near my house because they were out of it. I went by to pick it up yesterday and they had it stored in a cabinet near the front of the store. BTW...it's 102 degrees here today so a cabinet near the front of the store is not a refrigerated space! I refused to purchase it since it clearly states on the label that it has to be refrigerated. The clerk told me that the company sends it to them unrefrigerated. I was floored so I called the company. They do indeed send it unrefrigerated. They send it overnight mail and it is up to the store to refrigerate it immediately. According to the customer service rep, the product loses only about 10% of the live bacteria in about one week so as long as the store handles it properly after delivery, there isn't a problem. The customer service rep told me that the number of live bacteria guaranteed on the label refers to bacteria after delivery if stored properly so they have taken into account that the product will be out of refrigeration for a while. I asked the customer service rep how they know if the stores are handling the product properly. She said they don't have any way of checking. I'm surprised. Primadophilus is pretty expensive. I presume I am getting what I am paying for but now how do I know? No way to know. I would guess that the clerk at Vitamin Shoppe put the two bottles I ordered right back in the frig when I left so the next person who comes in will be buying an inferior product. Just sharing..... Guest guest
But you will note if you check out Primadophilus Optima on consumberlabs that florajen 3 is limited to lactobacillus. Prima contains both pre and probiotics and many more strains of bacteria. I am not using it for GI issues but for general health and immunity. Guest guest
Be aware that not all probiotics require refrigeration. Several have been studied and found to be shelf stable at room temperature for up to 4 years. The majority of probiotics that are purchased out of a refrigerator are not delivered that way to the store. I doubt that Walgreens uses refrigerated trucks to deliver their products to their stores. Independent health food stores that receive products from a distributor will receive probiotics on a refrigerated truck, and are generally stored in a cooler, unless the product is shelf stable. Buyer beware. Tim Cunningham RD/LD _____ From: rd-usa [mailto:rd-usa ] On Behalf Of sbsrd@...
