Guest guest
I haven't done any searches, but I know it's considered a prebiotic and there are long and short chain forms. While I was doing my didactic studies, one of the grad students at the U of Nebraska was doing her research on inulin. Ate it daily for a couple months.... haven't ever looked up the results, but I know the forms effected test subjects differently.... had to keep track of gas, # of stools etc. All for $50 or so. Maybe a google scholar search would turn up something. Cheerio, Schoneweis MS, RD Military Extension Agent - Health Nutrition <<--- look! new job!! Guest guest
I have to laugh, when I went on it following nasty GI problems I had so much gas someone asked if I was pregnant. Thank God nothing passed at that moment. But that to passed and my gut resolved it's problems but I sure remember the gas. Guest guest
You might check out cspinet.org- Nutrition Action Health Letter had a great article in their July/August 2008 issue- It says inulin may cause gas or other GI problems at doses above 15gm/day. Inulin is a soluble fiber but it's not viscous so it doesn't help lower cholesterol. It also doesn't do much for bowel regularity b/c gut bacteria goblle up most of it. I don't like how inulin/chicory root is being added to everything. I feel like it gives a false impression that these are great high fiber foods and there just isn't enough research on these isolated fibers. Bottom line per the article, fiber does not equal fiber. It's not the same as getting it from fruits,v egetables, whole grains. Holly Mistler, RD/LD Mercy Health Center OKC,OK > > > Does anyone know of any studies regarding the functionality of inulin?
