US Mountain Standard Tim Subj: weight and women thru lifecycle Anyone have reference for weight changes thru the lifecycle for women? Especially, how much weight can " average " woman expect to gain from perimenopsause thru menopause? Having trouble finding what I'm looking for. Would also like to be able to correlate in some way with declining estrogen levels, if possible. Have found articles on body comp changes. Thanks, Sharon Sharon Salomon, M.S., R.D. Guest guest
Might want to contact Glenn Gaesser (author of Big Fat Lies)--I recall the " experts " (from research) predict 2-10 pounds per decade healthy weight gain. Guest guest
As women age, their levels of " good " estrogen; estradiol, typically decrease and the levels/ratio of " bad " estrogen; estrone increase. Estradiol favors fat deposition on hips, positively effects blood fats and water balance and protects bone mass. Estrone (higher presence after menopause), drives abdominal fat deposition, general fat storing, and is a factor in insulin resistance. Diet, meds, exercise pattern, and genetics influence one's hormone production. As women age and they dont eat well and exercise, their resting metabolic rate declines each year (less muscle/ more fat % each year). When they eat the same number of kcals, they gain wt and turn from pears to apples due partly from the hormonal shifts of menopause. Guest guest
Wow, I saw that happen to my mother right before my eyes and had no idea why/how. She was always a Pear shape when I was growing up. After I moved out (college and beyond) I saw her transform into Apple as she got heavier (I blame her lifelong poor physical activity along with never eating breakfast, eating too fast, etc). Literally her upper body fat became significant and her thigh fat almost disappeared. She even got breast reduction surgery. Where did you find this information about different estrogen types? I'm thinking about myself in the future (although I appear to be heading in the opposite direction as my upper body fat has dimished - but I thought it was just because I became a CrossFit enthusiast). Guest guest
" As women ageand they dont eat well and exercise, their resting metabolic rate declines each year (less muscle/ more fat % each year). " I agree with the hormonal change info - it happened to me in my early 40's, I found myself regaining previously lost Pear weight as new-to-me Apple weight - and had to work harder to get rid of it (it was weird having a body shape different then what I was used to - as a fat person I didn't have a pregnant belly in my way except for pregnancy and then it showed up in perimenopause). After a certain age I think we all are at risk for apple wt gain due to the hormonal changes. Even if eating well and exercising the RMR drops with aging - so pick up the pace or eat more wisely while aging or some pounds are likely to creep on. Also remember too skinny is a longevity risk eventually - healthy, strong, moderately overweight is not a death sentence.
