Eudaimon: This is what I was told about the origin of the name: At the first house where the group met, the owner's dog was always on the roof. Given the white supremacist overtones of the membership, though, I whimsically suggested that it'd be a good idea to assemble a bunch of burly alcoholics, dress up in Hassidic attire with appropriate wigs and beards, and call ourselves the " Fiddler on the Roof " group. Then we could go to the next AA convention and see what kind of reaction we got from the " Dog on the Roof " people. My sponsor thought it was an excellent idea. Guest guest
I met the father of the one of the band members of the group in 1985. I was at a retreat in Ontario, Canada. He was a nice guy but the only thing he ever said to me about his son was to say he was " fairly successful " . I thought it was a really wierd thing to say. I didn't question further, but that statement comes to mind every time I hear the group. Was he trying to be " humble " or did he really believe his son could do better than a household name? butterbean-@... wrote: original article:/group/12-step-free/?start=9803 > OH - what a GREAT idea!! Guest guest
, I have heard that one of the original male members of the B-52s died of AIDS a few years back. I wonder if he might have been that man's son.
Guest guest
I don't know, Jim. I haven't seen Nick (the dad) since 1994. Nick was an old-timer AA and I haven't been in touch with the retreat group since '95. I remember both father and son had the same cupid's-bow mouth, but I'm not that familiar with the names of the members, sorry.
