Guest guest
The current ICD-9-CM code for cachexia is 799.4 which is defined as a) state of general ill health characterized by malnutrition, weakness, and emaciation; occurs during the course of a chronic disease and loss of body weight and muscle mass frequently seen in patients with cancer, AIDS or other diseases. Levels of serum hepatic transport proteins are not of help diagnosing this condition. ICD does not include lab values or BMI levels, either. Guest guest
I am glad that it does not include BMI since most of my Elders are cachexic at BMI of 22 due to large frame size. Guest guest
I am not sure it is reliable for anyone beyond the original test subjects men who are veterans in the VA hospital clinic system. But we are stuck with it. I just know from working with the older hispanic population in El Paso and the older Alaska Native population that it just does not apply. BMIs below the upper limit of " normal " often show marked wasting in the elderly. Makes you want to question the blanket recommendations given out.
