Re: New formulary

If you take 1 1/4, have your doctor order all 1/4 tabs....then you

only pay one price, not two....and if you think you will actually end

up taking more than that amount, tell him the pricing situation and

he may order more for you...with the smaller tabs you can easily

multidose daily as well.....my hubby takes the Armour and his is

going up to $80 for the three month supply as well (from $45)....it

is really crap!!!...AND he has many other drugs he has to take that

are doing the same thing....sue in TN

Girl...you have more problems with those doses and formulas (and

their costs!)than China has rice! As far as splitting the dose, that

is what I use and have always used as my criteria for taking my

thyroid earlier in the day..I can't sleep if I take it too late..so

you need to do what works for you! good luck!

If I order a 3 month supply of 1/4 for $80 and multidose it it won't

last 90 days and in the long run I will pay more. 1 1/4 would be 5

pills a day so a 90 day supply would be used up in 18 days if I am

doing my math right. Plus I have to wait 60 days before I can refill

my prescription so I would be out of medication for a month and a

half. I'll stick to getting the 3s and splitting them (instead of 90

days that should last 180.)

Your math is right but you started with the wrong numbers.... a 90 day

supply is the amount of medication that you require for 90 days... not 90

pills... So a 90 day supply is the number of tabs that you take a day

times 90

So at 5 pills per day you would need 5 X 90 or 450 tabs.

Maybe your formulary works differently than ours....but at 5 (1/4

gr.) tabs a day that would be 150 for 30 days, but if you are getting

a 90 days supply they would be sending you 450 tabs.....the doctor

writes...Armour 1/4 grain, take as directed, #450...3 refills....that

is how our doc would write it........sue in TN

WOW! I know it's cheaper to buy the bottles of 100 at a time, but I

I can ask but I don't think Merck Medco would prescribe that many

pills.

OK I checked online and it would be $80 for 450 tabs. Still sticking

to splitting 3s for the overall cost savings. :) $80 for 180 days vs

$80 for 90 days.

OOOPs forgot to add that my Dr is cool with me splitting the 3s too

to save money. I don't multidose so it should be ok. As long as my

blood tests are decent and I feel OK I'll stick to the 1 1/2.

Be careful---with our formulary, if you don't reorder every three

months (like you are saying yours will last 6 months) they check the

reason why with your doc and cut you back to a 90 day supply when the

doctor tells them how much you are actually taking---then they

threaten to revoke your ordering privileges....so, if I were you I

would still reorder them every three months and stock pile

some....sue in TN

stockpiling is good <smile> I stockpile whatever I can with extra

scripts and refills my sons and I do not use and when friends need

them I've got them on hand.

Hi, Louise,

My husband and I had a prescription plan with Merck-Medco for a

few years. If the doctor writes the prescription for multiple doses

through the day (smaller doses more often), then they are obligated to fill

it is written. The pharmacy can " suggest " changes, but they cannot make

them without a written order from the doctor. Tell your doctor how you

want to do this and see what he/she says.

The only thing is that I don't multidose so it's either pay $80 for

Thyrolar 1 and $80 for Thyrolar 1/2 or $80 for Thyrolar 3 and split

them. :)

I've checked their web site and can't find anything about refilling

prescriptions. I'm thinking I might be better off not asking. :)

Unless I run into expiration dates. The bottle of 3 I just got has an

expiration date of sometime NEXT year.

(Really freaky having expiration dates. When I filled my

prescriptions at Safeway I never got an expiration date.)

If anyone can come up with an innocent question that won't give Merck

Medco a clue as to what I am doing please share it. I am thinking of

asking something like - do I need to renew my prescriptions every 90

days. Period.

Give them a call and tell them the when your next refill is due you have

an annual car insurance payment due and might have to hold off on your

refill until you have the money available.... would that cause any

problems, you'd like to check into it now so that you have time to figure

stuff out.
