Using the Humalog pen is easier and quicker and more portable than the

count-a-dose system.

Both the pen and the count-a-dose system work. The choice is yours.

Using the pen is just a lot more convenient, and I will be glad when Lantus

is available in the pen. Using the pen does not require any eyesight at

all. Counting the dose of insulin can be done completely by feel and

listening to the clicks, if you desire.

Harry,

The lantus pen is available, but only through your doctor's office.

I don't know why Adventis chose to distribute it this way.

Seems sort of silly to me. They do release their lantus cartridges through

drug stores. But according to their medical lab, they have no intentions

of distributing the pens to the drug stores. So again, if you want a

lantus pen, you must ask your doctor to order it. Several people are

already using the lantus pens. And they all got them through their

doctors office. My doctor has order them. He's inturnist and was not

automatically sent pens. so it's foolish but that's is the way it is. Dave

another thought you want to consider is cost. Which is more cost effective for

you personally?

I've used a count a dose for over 10 years and love it.

Insulin Measuring

Hi all,

Tomorrow the nurses are coming back to start home healthcare with me. Since

I have located here recently, they want to change me to the insulin pens.

My thinking is that I already have the count-a-dose for the 100BDU syringe.

Is there any reason, then to change to the pen that would make things easier

for me?

Steps in using the count-a-dose:

1. Get out the count-a-dose system, and be sure not to have it fall apart.

2. Get out your vile of insulin.

3. Now get a ½ cc syringe out.

4. Now place the vile in the count-a-dose system.

5. Now correctly place the syringe into the count-a-dose system, and be

sure to remove the syringe cap first.

6. Invert the whole system including the vile and syringe .

7. Now turn the wheel the number of clicks desired in order to measure the

correct dose.

8. Now remove the filled syringe with the correct dose from the system.

9. Inject the correct dose.

10. Replace cap on syringe needle.

11. Throw syringe into a disposal unit like the trash can.

12. Return vile of insulin back to the refrigerator.

13. Put up count-a-dose system.

Steps in using the pen:

1. Get the pen out of the refrigerator or from your shirt pocket or your

purse, where ever it is located and remove the pen cap.

2. Get the needle out of its place, your box, shirt pocket or pants pocket

or your purse.

3. Remove safety seal from the needle outer shield.

4. Afix needle to the pen by screwing it on.

5. Remove outer shield and the inner shield by pulling on it exposing the

needle covered with the inner shield, then removing the inner shield by

pulling on it.

6. Prime the exposed needle by turning the dose knob a couple of clicks.

First pull back the knob before doing the primer dose. When the two clicks

have been felt press the knob forward. This will fill the needle with

insulin and flush out the air.

7. Now dose correctly by pulling back the knob once more and turning it the

number of clicks, which can be felt and heard, Three click equals three

units and ten clicks equals ten units and so on. Once the correct dose is

measured proceed to the next step.

8. Inject the correct dose by inserting the needle into the body and

pressing forward on the dose knob.

9. Place outer shield over the exposed needle and screw the needle off the

pen.

10. Throw the outer shield containing the needle, which is now covered and

not exposed, into the trash along with the safety seal and the inner shield.

11. Return pen cap to the pen and place it in your pocket, purse or

refrigerator.

Before using either method above be sure to wipe the body area with and

alcohol wipe before injecting.

If the pen runs out of insulin, it cannot bbe turned at all. If you lose

count of the dose, just return the dose to zero by turning the dose knob

counter clockwise until it completely stops, then count the clicks once more

to the correct dose.

The cost of the needles for the pen is the same as the cost of the syringes

for the count-a-dose system.

By the time a person using the count-a-dose system has drawn the correct

dose in his/her syringe, I am already through with the whole process by

using the pen, not to mention the convenience and the portability of the

pen.
