I would ask your IR if your fibroids have calcified, he is much more

qualified to determine this than an OB/Gyn. He should tell you if you do

have some calcification, if the UAE is the way to go. An IR is a radiologist

who should be able to tell from your ultrasound or MRI if calcification has

taken place. Reading ultrasounds and MRI's is what Radiologist's do, then

they write a report that is given to the OB/Gyn.

You should meet with your IR prior to the UAE to ask these questions.

Calcification of UFs and UAE? Depopronera (?)

shots?

Hi Everyone!

Has anyone been told that their fibroids are calcifieing (spelling?)? Has

anyone heard whether or not UAE can be performed successfully if your

fibroid has calcification? My gyn/ob said that since my fibroid appears

to be hardening that it may not shrink with UAE. He also said that all of

his patients who have had UAE had to have a hysterectomy afterwards.

(Before he mentioned 2 patients that needed a hyst after UAE.)

His suggestion for treatment was to try a 3 month shot of DepoPronera

(Spelling? Sorry, I can't read Dr's handwriting.) and then do a vaginal

hysterectomy with a belly button incision in order to do a bladder

suspension. Has anyone heard about this drug or used it? Any symptoms?

I have UAE scheduled for next Thursday, June 7th with another Dr. an I.R..

Should I go ahead with the UAE and just hope and pray that it works?

Thanks for any replies. I need the advice, help, comments, etc.

Thanks again,

Ruth Ann in TX

Hi Roianne,

Thank you for your quick reply. It is my IR (Interventional

Radiologist) who will be performing my Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE).

I just had this transvaginal ultrasound (sonogram) done in my GYN's office

today. I have a call in to my IR's office but have not heard back from

his assistant yet. If he asks I will get copies from my GYN's office and

take them to him.

I was just wondering if anyone out there has had calcification of their

fibroids? Or has anyone been told that they could not have UAE done

because of it?

Ruth Ann,

Why did you have the transvaginal ultrasound today? Was it the IR who ordered

it, or your gyn? Have you had a MRI? If not, is your IR intending for you to

have a MRI done prior to your UAE (or, if he ordered the ultrasound, is that all

he requires?).

I am of the same opinion as Roianne, that the IR needs to look at your

ultrasound and tell you what he thinks (and recommends). This IS what they do.

I don't know which doctor you are more comfortable with, but if it were me, I

know I would give more credence to the IR's advice on this one.

If your gyn is not working with your IR and ordered this ultrasound, I would

wonder why - to dissuade you from having UAE? One question seems to lead to

another...if your gyn is not working with your IR, does that mean the IR is

willing to have you have a UAE without a supportive gyn and/or without a gyn

referral in the first place?

Ruth Ann,

How/what tests did the Dr. use to determine the fibroid was calcifying?

I've never heard of this.

My gyn told me my fibroid, seen via ultrasound, looked like it was

degenerating; e.g. by degenerating he meant the fibroid was getting

" choked-off " (no blood) to some places. If I remember correctly he pointed

to dark clusters in the middle of the white fibroid and said that's where

the degeneration was happening.

Ihave had a UAE and I have been on depo-provera. My UAE was in March 2000

and was a clinical failure, no shrinkage, no relief in heavy periods. Six

months after my UAE I was put on depo-provera to stop my heavy periods and

get my blood count back up (iron level was 7.2) As far as the depo goes, it

did stop my heavy periods, HOWever, I gained 7 lbs, bled little bits

constantly-ALWAYS wore pads, and had no sex drive. These are all classic

symptoms of depo. I should have gone in for a 3rd shot the first of March

but decided against it. Now, I have not had a period since!! I'm afraid to

say anything to my Dr. as I'll probably jinx myself and start bleeding right

August, 6 months after failed UAE, I was put on depo to stop my heavy

periods and get my iron levels up (they were at 7.2). As far as the depo

goes, it did stop my heavy bleeding, however, I gained almost 10lbs, bled

little bits constantly-NEVER stopped, and had no sex drive. These are all

classic symtoms of this drug. I stopped taking the shots in March and

haven't had a period since and lost all the weight. I'm getting a little

concerned about not having a period but I'm afraid the minute I say

something to the Dr. they'll come back -JINX- right away!!

As far as the UAE goes, I'm not sure why it failed. All I know is there is

still blood flowing to my uterus in vast amounts. My only word of caution

here is that it is not as successful as the people pushing make it out to

be. There really isn't any data as far as post procedure symptoms or

problems. Success rate is supposedly 85%. I never thought I would be one

of the 15% failures, but I was.

Ruth Ann,

I noticed at this web site, " Fibroid Uterine Treatment Center " by Dr.

Stringer, there is an answer/question reply to " Fibroid - Calcification " .

However you have to pay $15 to see it.

Hi Debra,

It was just a regular Transvaginal Ultrasound. Supposedly he saw something

on the print outs that made him think my fibroid was calcifing. I do not

know how much I trust him any more. He told me all of his patients who

have had UAE have had to have a hyst afterwards. He mentioned that UAE is

EXTREMLY painful and that chances are that the fibroid will grow back. He

is against my having a UAE done ( although he has not said so in those

words). He is pushing for a vaginal hysterectomy. He really didn't give

me many options. He recommended the shot I mentioned below and a vag hyst

w/ bladder suspension to help w/ the urinary frequency and stress

incontinence. He also mentioned BC pills but then mentioned that since my

blood pressure was kind of high I should probably avoid that(?). When I

asked about myo he said that since my fibroid was large (HA,HA!) and since

it was intermural that a myo would be too difficult. It would be more

complicated than my uterus was worth I guess. He is another one of those

gyn's who feel that a uterus serves no purpose beyond being a glorified

incubator. He told me {quote}, " the uterus does NOT produce any hormones,

it is not affect sexual pleasure or your libido in anyway, nor does it

serve any purpose beyond helping to produce babies " . The Dr. wants me to

believe that since I all ready have my four kids and do not plan on having

anymore I do not need my uterus.

He is the second ob/gyn who has come highly recommended that has pretty

much just offered a hyst as a treatment option and said that because I do

not want anymore kids myo is not an option for me.

I am getting pretty frustrated. How do we weed out the old world, old

school, lets cut it out, thinkers from the new, open minded, give me options

Drs?

I guess I'll be looking for a new gyn. And I still need to find out about

this calcification if it is true.

Thanks for listening!

B.

It was my gyn who wanted me to have this US done. He is not working with

my IR. My IR doesn't know about this US yet. I plan to give him a copy.

He, the IR, is recomending UAE based on TransUS and CT I had done back in

Feb/Mar. The IR is working with my PCP ( a completely other Dr.). My PCP

is an MD Family Practitioner. She has been good so far and has not

hesitated to give me the referals my insurance company requires to see the

so called " specialists " I have seen. I feel I trust the IR more than this

my second gyn in less than 3 months. I am pretty sure I will still have

the UAE based on what my IR tells me regarding the aledged calcification

of my fibroid. I will know more tomorrow after I talk to him.

As far as having an MRI done the IR feels they are too expensive and knows

that my HMO will not pay for it except under extreme conditions. He says

that although an MRI is preferable, a good quality US is good enough for

him to be able to determine if UAE is a viable option. ( He has 20+ years

experience.)

Thanks for the inquirey and for the " food for thought " .

B,

Thank you for sharing your experience. You are the only one so far who

has responded to the Depo-provera shot question. (Thank you also for the

correct spelling. I could not make out my Dr's handwriting at all.) After

I asked the Gyn about the symptoms from the shot he mentioned that some of

his patients did " gain a pound or two " with the shot. He also mentioned

" emotional problems and mood swings " as possible side effects. The other

things he mentioned was oily skin and spotting. He said that the shot

should stop my periods but that I would not experience any other

menopausal type symptoms.(Hmm ? I wonder why he could not look me in the

eye when he said this?)

I am sorry your UAE did not work out as you hoped. I guess we never know

until we try whether or not we are in the happy, lucky " majority " who will

have success with a particular procedure or if we will be one of " the

minorities " who are the unlucky to have bad luck with it. I wish you luck

with all you are going through and wish I had some good advice for you.

All that I can do is pray for you, which I will do.

Anyhow, thanks again.

Wishing you good health,

Debra,

After doing a search of my own I found the following site:

Hampton Roads Center For Fibroid Embolization -- FAQs

.... Is there a size limit for the procedure? Virtually all fibroids

respond to UFE (except those that have already degenerated and calcified).

The question is will ...

http://www.ufecenter.com/faq8.html [More Results From:

www.ufecenter.com]

I thought you might be interested as I know you are strongly considering

UAE and you also mentioned that your Dr. said that your fibroid is

degenerating. There are other sites I found on fibroid calcification as

well. I just started to review them. I will let you know if I find

anything of importance.
