It is SO much faster than dial-up. Does it have to be with the same company that you have cable with? And why do you need a separate modem. My cable company said I could rent a modem from them for $10 per month or pay $199 up front. And the cost is $49.95 per month (including the $10 rental fee). Is that about normal. I am only paying $9.95 a month for Starpower which is a great deal, since I paid for the whole year, but the service, at least out where I am is terrible and if the cable is better it is worth it to me. It costs $3.95 a month to rent the modem, and 29.95 a month for internet service. It is great. We had to purchase the modem, I think for 199. I pay I believe 29. per month and have on-line round the clock. I too would not switch back to ISP. One thing, I did have some problems this past week (got it in Nov of last year) but it turned out to be a loose connection in the box outside. There was a hang up because it seemed that everyday at noon I lost my computer connection and the TV was snowed under so to speak. The problem was they could not send someone to check it out for 3 days. When they did come they said it was a loose connection and for some reason some in the building was running electrical interference just at that time pulling a drain on it. Anyway, It is worth it. Otherwise it will only be a matter of time before someone plants a trojan on your computer. There are programs running 24/7 on the internet by script kiddies looking for and logging the ip numbers of unprotected computers. Zone Alarm has a free personal firewall that is one of the best. Personally, I didn't see the sense in renting the modem because I figured it made as much sense as renting a car ... wasted money. I considered renting a modem for a short period of time to make sure I liked it, but again, I just couldn't see wasting even one month rent on the modem when that could be one payment towards paying for it. Just me I guess. Our local cable company is , and I've been pretty happy with the service so far, except for 3 down times, which I suppose in the grand scheme of things, isn't too bad. In my area, all the phone lines and cable lines and electrical lines are underground, (in most neighborhoods anyway) so we really don't have that many outtages. Just my $0.02. BTW, antivirus software is just as important as a security/firewall program, because oftentimes the virus you get is the access the hacker needs to get into your computer and do the things I was talking about. Viruses don't always damage your data.. sometimes the sole purpose of a virus (actually called a trojan in this particular case) is to get into your computer.. often just because they can. For this reason I especially recommend Black Ice because the explanations are wonderful... it tells you when to be paranoid and scared and when not to be. I'm pretty sure Black Ice has a free trial, so even if you hate the program, you'll have learned an amazing amount of information about hackers and firewalls and viruses and trojans and computer security. No, I don't work for Black Ice, but I had tried several other firewalls before I found Black ice.. it's the easiest to use (what I refer to as idiot proof-- and I love programs that are idiot proof), and the amount of education you get every time you get a " hit " is amazing. Any antivirus program you get will become worthless if you don't keep it updated. The same hackers who constantly try to find open ports they can hack into are also making up new viruses and trojans all the time. Let me repeat that: If you don't keep your antivirus program updated, it's worthless. New viruses are coming out all the time. Macafee is ok .. but for those on AOL you also have to worry about Trojans.. password stealers. The best antivirus/antitrojan I've found is The Cleaner from Moosoft.com. Most of the antivirus/antitrojan programs out there will find the viruses/trojans, but they won't necessarily clean them. The Cleaner is the only one I've found that will not only find them but clean them or render them useless. And again.. KEEP THEM UPDATED. The Cleaner runs all the time and sets off an alarm anytime there's a change in your operating system ini files and reg files.
