Guest guest
This is for one or all of you diabetic experts. Which I am not. A friend of mine was having dizzy spells and since she works in a nursing home she had her blood sugar checked during a spell and it was 60. She went to her MD who ordered a 2 hour fasting glucose tolerance test. Her fasting Gluc was 98; at 1 hour 200 and at two hours 154 with the desired level at 2 hours listed at less than 140. The MD didn't do a Hgb A1c but put her on Metformin 500 mg daily with a follow-up appointment in two weeks to increase her dose to 1000 mg without additional blood work. She told her she would probably be on insulin in 10 years. No mention was made to diet or exercise. She, of course, freaked out. She is in her mid 40's a little overweight and has no family hx of DM. I found the whole thing a little extreme. I was thinking more along the lines of reactive hypogycemia, and had previously given her recommendations that appeared to be helping. I told her to request a referal to an endrocronoligist (excuse spelling). What do you all think? Mavis , RDLD
