Guest guest
We too have had tremedous problems with constipation with our 3 year old. We finally solved it using N-Acetyl Glucosamine (Jarrow Formula 750mg from iherb.com - one capsule twice daily in juice) and aloe vera juice (1/2 to 1 teaspoon twice daily in juice). Guest guest
Roxanne, Is she taking any enzymes? Guest guest
Roxanne, Does she experience any pain in her lower right side? Extreme constipation and pain in that area are clues for appendicitis. If there is pain, you might want to get her to a doctor pronto! If she has big particles in her stool, she may have leaky gut syndrome which L-Glutamine, an amino acid, helps with that. If she can tolerate Chinese Food, for some reason, that can help a great deal. If she can tolerate apples with the skin on, that is another natural laxative. I am surprised the prunes did not work. Maybe prune juice if it can be tolerated (watered down if needed). Otherwise, maybe the health food store would have a children's psyllium husk/seed remedy, one of the best fiber boosters around! Guest guest
A couple things about fiber. If you are giving extra fiber (soluble or insoluble) especially if it is dry you need to make sure you increase her water intake considerably (8-12 glasses for an adult) or you will make her constipated with the extra fiber. It is also important to add fiber gradually or you can cause constipation. Dry fruit like raisins etc. can be very constipating even with increased water intake, try giving her fresh fruit instead. Dairy, pasta, red meat, soft drinks, medications and deficiencies etc. can cause constipation. With my mercury toxicity I am constipated very often. My hair analysis showed low Magnesium. Magnesium works very well to soften and prevent constipation without side effects. You do have to gradually increase the dosage just so you don't get diarrhea. I tried everything and the Magnesium works the best for me (I take 1200 mg a day), everyone is different and you will have to experiment. With a child I would start with 400 mg which is a fairly low dose. This may work by the next day or take a few days, if it hasn't worked up the dose to 800mg. It is important not to take the Magnesium with Calcium, they conflict with each other and you won't get the softening effect. Chronic constipation can cause other serious bowel and intestinal problems (extremely painful ones) so it is important to get it under control. Guest guest
We use " Lily of the Desert " Brand Aloe Vera Juice. The dose I mentioned (1/2 to 1 tsp twice a day) is what works for us. More or less may be needed for your child. I would start slow and use more as warranted. Charlie > > I am confused about the aloe vera dose. I got the aloe vera juice from > local HFS. For what it's worth, our son used to have chronic constipation too, but after a round of Diflucan, then aggressive (natural) yeast & bacterial treatment, they've almost normalized (a small miracle there). Have you tried Culturelle (1 to 3 caps just before bedtime)? Or Solaray's " Yeast Cleanse " (stinks and tastes horrible, but does the trick). Extra magnesium might make the difference too. Hope that helps,
Guest guest
From what you list, it sounds like she does get fiber. How about aloe vera juice and liquid magnesium to soften the stools? Also make sure she drinks lots of water. You also might try massaging and kneading her abdomen in a clockwise direction to help loosen things up. Guest guest
Roxanne-- I don't know if this will meet your criteria, but I LOVE Benefiber. It is new--you buy it over the counter next to the other fiber laxatives. It is not gritty at all. It dissolves completely in liquid, no flavor, no odor, and no color if you let the juice/water sit for a minute. My dd has had rocks for bm's... and while on this product, her stool is staying very soft. If that alone doesn't work, then perhaps consider adding a little magnesium citrate-- mag citrate is used for clean-out procedures, when given in large doses. A little bit daily can be enough to keep the stool moving through. Guest guest
I wanted to agree with TK that magnesium really can get things moving... when I was taking mag though, I found myself constantly yawning all day long. Someone suggested taking it at bedtime instead of first thing in the morning. This helped and I can now get to sleep a little easier, and be " awake " during the day. (Magnesium is very relaxing). I also wanted to add that with chronic constipation, sometimes you need to do a clean-out--the old impacted stool stays up high and you need to get things moving to the diarrhea state to get a lot of the old stool out... then you can work on regularity. Also, Benefiber is hydrolyzed guar gum... so you can check into whether that meets your criteria. W > A couple things about fiber. Hopefully I'm wrong Roxanne, I am not sure about this, but I will try to check it out. I have to avoid glutens myself, but no one has told me so far that psyllium would be out for me. Anyone else know about this? Shoshana
