Guest guest
, I have not known until just a couple of days ago about the diabetic group. I wish you guys were closer to here for meetings, it's very difficult to get all the way to LA from here just as it is to get from LA out here to the Inland Empire, it's literally an all-day affair. Will certainly look forward to seeing the group at the convention though... I am a member of the Inland Empire chapter of the CCB and am its delegate, my wife is delegate for the nearby Active Blind Chapter (Loma ) of CCB, so we will both be going to the convention. Guest guest
The room rates for the National are I think, $83 a night for 2 and $93 for 3 people. Guest guest
, When is the conference call on Thursday? Hope it's not in the middle of the day, I have an ADA transportation meeting to attend so I can give our local bus company a bit of hell for not having very many stops announced on its enunciator so that will take most of my energy for the day....... Guest guest
Cy, I am referring to the bus announcements. Our local Riverside Transit Agency installed enunciators on MOST of its buses several years ago. And they are to be commended for the fact that most of their buses have them and that they are functional, and that the bus drivers are actually keeping them turned on. They lack, though, in the area of frequency. There are many places along the bus route I take where important streets are not announced, and in fact some areas where you won't hear announcements at all for a good 10-15 minutes. If you are blind and can't see the landmarks go by, you'd be lost very quickly. I've been trying to get them to add more announcements but am running against a brick wall. We are lucky to have the enunciators, yes, but that's not enough. Bill

Guest guest
I am totally blind and I do know what you are talking about. Man, you do not have a hint where the stupid bus is and the sad thing is that neither do many of the drivers... If you ask " Where are we? Guest guest
bill, I live in the city of Highland. It is next to Redlands. In 1985, I got a job at Patton state Hospital. That is how I ended up here. I really like the area, but I hate the transportation. I use access sometimes and cabs and I have a partime assistant to drive me around for my work as I am a real estate broker now. Very hard!!! Guest guest
Cy, That IS frightening if the drivers don't even know where they are. They DO here, but it's always been hard getting drivers to announce stops, hence the advent of the enunciator system to do it for them. But then someone had to figure a way for the drivers to shut them off. The first time I ever encontered a driver that turned one off, I asked why the enunciator was turned off, he said " I get tired of hearing the stops anounced. " I quickly replied " Those stop announcements aren't for YOU, they're for ME, and I want them turned on right now. " When the driver told me he didn't know how to turn them on, I told him how. And the bus company had the nerve to think I was dumb when I complained to them at the next ADA meeting that " the bus drivers can't turn the enunciators off. " It took everything I had to show them that yes, it could be done. Then they had egg all over their collective faces. That was in Baltimore. Now I'm facing a slightly different battle here in Riverside, California, not with drivers not turning on the announcements, just with infrequent announcements, and even one spot where the WRONG STREET is announced. I've got my work cut out for me. Bill

Guest guest
all. Guest guest
, Yeah I know, we got a little off-topic and carried away. I'm most anxious to get with the group at the convention though, as it will be nice to meet some of our posters face-to-face and we can all support each other better in our daily battle with diabetes. How I wish my mom would be social enough to find a group of people to meet with, to help her understand how to deal with diabetes. She just doesn't get a thing I say about diabetes and I don't think she ever will. She can't learn beyond frying foods, and now that she no longer prepares the food (she taught my dad how to do it when she was losing her sight) it's all fried, period. No wonder her sugars vary greatly every day and no wonder she feels bad all the time. But change anything? Um, might as well talk to a brick wall. I see how much group support has helped me and I've been able to pass that along to others, but people like my mom seem unreachable. Oh well, I try.....
