Does anyone know? Many family members experience respiratory difficulties, but don't feel we have asthma and that seems to be the only diagnosis doctors think of if you tell them you have trouble breathing. S. >> my " first career " was that of a respiratory therapist. I have preformed many lung fuction tests that you describe. The peak flow or pulmonary function test ( PFT) all measure lung function. Many different lung diseases can be tested by these tests including asthma, emphesema, chronic bronchitis and others. The testing gives doctors an idea of the amount of air a person can exhale, diffuse and use to properly breath. I am sure that if the docs felt any other lung disease was causing the resp probs they would continue testing. I have spoke with Dr Cohen about this and he said that asthma is very common with Mito because the smooth muscle involved with the resp tract gets effected by the Mito the same as any other muscle in the body. It is also quite common for Mito patients to experience air hunger where they breath very rapidly-------like does.
