As a combat veteran that served in the infantry during one of our most popular wars, I can still feel the terror that I felt when a sniper is firing at you from an unknown position. What a RUSH ! I have been drawing on those experiences for years in hope that I can turn it around for the positive. Like steppism, the military brainwashed many thousands of young men like myself into participating in this war while giving false sets of reasoning and dogmas. Actually, he remained in the army after the war was over, and was assigned to some sort of indoctrination of troops because of his speechmaking skills. He was definitely commended for bravery though - it was reported on a BBC documentary " Timewatch " here, which has high historical accuracy. Hitler may well have stayed in the Army after the War - why not after the fighting had stopped - but Timewatch reported that the experience of gassing did make him decide not to stay in the Army indefinitely. From the sound of it you doubtless also know he was a failed artist too, and that his envy of succesful Jewish artists added further fuel to his Anti-Semitism. What a pity he didnt paint better. What I have read suggests that he was very depressed at the time because Germany had been defeated and, of course, because he was blind. I know he did take on suicidal missions during the war, and was considered very brave. First thing he'd probably ever done that got him any praise since his mother died. I know quite a bit about Hitler's biography. I know he failed the tests to get into his chosen art school, and that he probably believed that Albert Speer, his protegee, was some sort of alter ego. Don't you remember the arguments that Diener and I had on this list about how Hitler came to power? I'm not sure Godwin's law is such a bad thing. When I lived in Germany, less than 20 years after the end of WWII, there were people my age who thought that the Jews must have done something awful, what else could have triggered such a radical response? For me, it's important to remember the injustices committed then and to compare what I see in daily life to what the Germans must have thought were beneficial changes, though they entailed " minor " injustices, and to fight minor injustices wherever they occur. Pity that if there is a God he didnt take the oppportunity to say: " Adolf, Adolf, Why doest thou thinketh abt starteth to persecuteth me? " Oddly, I dont remember you arguing with - I mustnt have been too interested at the time. IIRC the theory of the Authoritarian Personality considers that authoritarians are cpable of apparently tremendous physical courage but have no little moral courge. Sounds abt right. Ive seen a shrink suggesting that the fact that the mentally ill have been brutalized over the centuries is proof that they really hate other ppl, which is why other ppl are so cruel to them! Talk abt blaming the victim! One thing that I find so bizarre abt the Holocaust is the peculiar " salami " way it happened, with gradual increases in human rights abuses, ending in amss murder. I doubt it lasted until the end, but originally auschwitz had a hospital that actually treated prisoners (rather than do medicl experiements on them). I remember I think one survivor saying he was in a coma lying on a top bunk in the hospital with typhus when they decided to gas everybody in that ward, but because he was so still they didnt notice him and he woke up later to find the place empty. He got up to be told by the other prisoners what had happened. I was just trying to make a point about how even after O.J. was arrested, there were still millions of Americans who loved him. Then, two years later, when everyone finally figured out he was a closet psychopath. He became this social pariah. If you asked anybody they'd say they always hated him. And they always knew he killed his wife and her friends. Hindsight is always 20/20. I think society loves scapegoats, its fun to have someone to hate. People like O.J., Hitler, Dahmer, Bundy: they are easy people to vent all of our frustrations at. Maybe we feel if we lash out at a murderer, it will keep us from ever getting in trouble. The problem is, it doesn't feel as good when you are the one being attacked. Ask that guy from Atlanta falsely accused by the FBI of bombing the Olympics. People love to build others up just to tear them down. A great example is Calista Flockhart. Two years ago she was America's sweetheart. Now, she's a joke on Leno and seen as a sick anorexic. I'd hate to ever be on the other end of all this heat that people generate. They can be brutally harsh. Yeah, Hitler was a bad, bad, bad, bad man. And O.J.'s an womanizing sociopath. And Dahmer was one of the sickest people who ever lived. But I think every human being on this planet has had bad thought, felt antisocial and done at least one sick act. And that's why we judge the people who get caught so severely. It gives us someone to blame for all of our personal woes.
