Jackie,

Can't say anything to top this eating and to me roughing it to survive

experience. Wow! I may have just starved by now if faced with the challenges

and the expense. I'd love to read more about your experiences as well as learn

more about the cost of living in Alaska.

I have never heard of an iodine toxicity from eating lobster although it is a

fairly good source of the element. My ex-husband was out on his friend's

lobster boat one day on a fishing trip with the guys. He ate 14 lobsters that

day and he was fine. Tell your Mom she is welcome anytime!!!

Kerry,

What Aldi's food items do you like?  I've never shopped at an Aldi's before I

would like to get your opinion on them.

Thanks.

Sharon,

Some small things for me:

planning for leftovers--trying to make sure I don't throw items away (we do have

them at least 1-2 nights per week)

making an even more conscious effort NOT to eat out (we never did much anyway,

but reserving it for maybe 1 meal per week for the kids and a nice meal out for

me and my spouse every couple weeks or so)

making sure I buy staples at my cheapest place (for me locally, Aldi or

Woodmans)

adding more beans--we try to have them at least 1-2 times per week and really

make a meal of them

TRYING hard to shop in my cabinets--I admit I'm not the best at using up all I

have (like the feeling of whipping up a meal on a whim, which I do) but I'm

trying to make sure I incorporate my already purchased items into my weekly meal

plan prior to heading to the store at all.

There's a few for me.

It is not a iodine toxicity per say but if you are allergic to lobster

chances you will react to iodine, such as beta iodine, and the iodine

in xray contrast. It happened to my sister and before CAT scans and

MRIs it was a real problem for her.

I love Aldi's !!

I have never gotten anything that isn't good.

Just watch the produce, but that is the same most places.

But they have quality and unique items. Some weeks they

have themes with feature items. I think next week is Asian.

They will have all the different foods frozen, prepared and individual

ingredients. They will even have an electric wok.

This week was Italian. They have a round pizza oven, and then

various Italian foods.....frozen, prepared and individual ingredients.

The spumoni and tiramisu are both good. They have a frozen

Eggplant Parmesan. I have to correct myself....I forgot that the

eggplant dish isn't as good as I have had, not horrible, just not

as good. The frozen Italian breaded tilapia fillets are good.

And around the holidays they had a praline topped Sweet Potato Casserole

that people fought over......lol.

Anyway you should try it, I think you will like it.

I don't think this is accurate either but base my opinion strictly on my

personal experience.

I am very allergic to all crustaceans. If I'm scratched by a live one I go into

anaphylactic shock within 20 minutes. If I eat one raw or cooked, same shock in

half the time. However, I can and have had many IVPs and other iodine based

studies w/o any reactions except a bit of flushing or heat and on one occassion

a few welts on my face. That's not to say it wouldn't be a worse reaction if I

continued to have IVPs but fortunately those aren't needed too often.

On the other hand my brother who can eat 14 lobsters at one sitting (per

previous lobster and seafood from New England posts) is fine, but with his first

iodine study for an auditory canal tumor had an extreme anaphylactic reaction.

So................... it's difficult for me to understand and I'm sure there is

an answer.

Are these items all cost effective? or just convenient, novel and good?

what are you doing to save at the supermarket

I'm curious about what you all are doing (if anything) to save money on food

purchases. Using more coupons? Reading the sales on Wednesdays? Changing

where you shop for food? Buying store brands? Switching to less expensive cuts

of meat, fish, etc.? Using canned veggies? Buying in bulk when on sale?

There are just two of us so I haven't done much of anything. I'm trying to

avoid some of those impulse buys....the ones that tempt me when I go to places

noticing new products, wondering what they are, how they taste, what you can

do

with them. I'm trying to use up what's in the house before I buy a new batch

of

anything.

That's really about it.

Well, I save money when I shop there. Overall the savings are real.

Of course other stores may run specials on an item, making it cheaper than Aldi.

But I have found that I can get more for my money there.

Their website gives more info......

Amy,

There are a whole bunch. I don't do my complete shopping there, but I do get

many staple items and some things that are their special buys from time to time.

For example, I've recently started making my own refried beans (we like refried

beans a lot--canned seem like cat food). They have dried pinto beans. Sour

cream, jarred salsa, vanilla wafers for the kids (not a " health food " but just

as good as the brand ones), graham crackers, some cheeses (I like their mexican

cheeses and gorgonzola), some produce (their oranges have been really good

lately), tortillas, juice (they have many 100% juices that are at least $2 less

than brand names like white and purple grape juice), white sugar, brown sugar,

white flour (I buy my whole wheat flour elsewhere), eggs and their egg beater

product, I usually make orange juice from concentrate and theirs is just fine,

canned corn for recipes and soups, canned tomato products, paper products when

needed (TP, kleenex), cream cheese (they do have lite---I like to bake). They've

recently started to carry brown rice as well and have a pretty extensive mexican

flavored line. They

have a new skincare line that so far, is fantastic. A friend of mine has tried

more, but the " night cream " is $3.99 or so per jar and great stuff.

That's some that come to mind as staples. I do try other items from time to

time--just depends on what they have. They do honor their 100% guarantee--if you

don't like it once you've tried it, bring it back for a full refund. I've never

actually done that, but a friend of mine has and they do honor it.

While shopping there one day, another friend of mine was speaking with either

someone from Holland or Germany mentioned that Aldi is one of their national

store there, but a discount store here with a stigma attached sometimes.

We have a large distrubution center here in Batavia, IL so there are many Aldi's

in our area here (you may or may not see it on the back of some of your

packaging). Some are very nicely done with copper roofing and nice windows, just

depends on how new they are and the local building codes.

Sorry it's so long---it's a decent little store with not much selection per

item, but the ones I do buy, are quite good and inexpensive.

Good luck and happy shopping!

Kerry

I'm curious about what you all are doing (if anything) to save money on food

purchases. Using more coupons? Reading the sales on Wednesdays? Changing

where you shop for food? Buying store brands? Switching to less expensive cuts

of meat, fish, etc.? Using canned veggies? Buying in bulk when on sale?

There are just two of us so I haven't done much of anything. I'm trying to

avoid some of those impulse buys....the ones that tempt me when I go to places

like Whole Foods. You know, when you start going up and down the aisles

noticing new products, wondering what they are, how they taste, what you can do

with them. I'm trying to use up what's in the house before I buy a new batch of

anything.

That's really about it.

Kerry

I see what you are saying. My oldest sister has this " allergy " or better yet,

sensitivity. Poor sister can't eat any seafood with the exception of white

fish! I would just die if I couldn't eat lobster or crab!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Aldi's has a unique approach, I think. When you park, you seen all the

grocery carts lined up and locked. You put in a quarter and one is

released for your use. When you finish, you push the cart back in and

get your quarter back.

- no carts damaging cars in the parking lot

- no need for workers to go out to the lot and collect carts

Inside, the items may or may not be brands you normally find; most are

Aldi's own, and I've found them mainly very good. They had a Maine

lobster special in December, the lobsters were excellent. They often

have small electric appliances at half or less the usual price, and I've

liked the crockpot I got there as well as my others.

At the checkout, you have to bring your own bags, and they don't take

credit cards or checks.

- no credit card markup, thus they keep prices lower

- no cost of bags to the grocery store, passed on to you.

I think it promotes good ecology, and smart shopping, and I wish more

stores would take that approach.

Aldi has stores throughout the world. Their site provides additional

store/company information.

http://aldifoods.com/index_ENU_HTML.htm

Aldi's is still family owned, by the Albrecht family.

They appear to be like the Sam Walton family of Germany. The 2 brothers who

founded the company

are reported to be the richest men in Germany. Their 2008 revenues were $58

billion.

This link gives the history and current information of the company of stores and

family.

Pretty often, every meal I cook serves for several meals, afterwards. If

it's something like a tri tip (only on sale!), I'll make three different

meals with it, doing such things as cutting up to add to rice, beans and

onions, served with a veggie, like broccoli or zucchini. My husband is

finally concerned enough with finances that he's willing to eat fewer

meat meals, too, which cuts down on costs.

I also make a chicken and bean soup that I purposely make when we can

eat it for several nights in a row. VERY affordable, with lentils, pinto

beans and (my favorite) onions. My husband like biscuits, so I can buy

him the cheapies at the market. I tend to not scrimp on veggies and

fruit, but WILL look for specials. Probably biggest splurge is avocados.
